This thread is just silly. You're essentially asking "Do women want things?" Why wouldn't they. It's not like they're aliens or anything... though I'm sure some guys will disagree strongly, lol .

Ok - at the risk of being one of those other types of women we all complain about from time to time, which I'm not usually, here's the question: do women bass players have GAS? Of course we want other stuff (especially shoes and boots). We're women! But, if we play bass, do we also GAS for bass stuff? One inquiring man, at least, wants to know.

IMO, a vacation makes one's life better, whether they're male or female--as long as it's a good vacation. If you disagree, I have to ask: Do you ever take any?

OK, but I doubt that "vacation" would come up in a game show where people were asked "Name something that makes your life better in the long run". That question, IMO, points to something that is more long lasting than a short, temporal benefit. Something that makes life better would be "family, friends, health, money"....etc. Besides, she addressed it as something that a woman is interested in. Why wouldn't a man be interested in it?

Vacation, something so limited that makes your life better in the long run? Really? Yes, I do take them. Heck, I'm on one big vacation right now, as I am unemployed. I might add I don't really see it as beneficial.....

From my experience - no. Women just crave one good, universal, comfortable and sweet lookin' bass for them
It's a general rule (don't want to be sexist or sth, it's usually truth):
Men: One garment, many tools.
Women: Many garments, one tool.

I'm a bass player, but because I'm female, I suddenly must have a million shoes/handbags/dresses/etc and never GAS for nice basses, right? Most bass players would spend money on bass-related things, correct? Why does it make a difference if the bass player is male or female? I'm not trying to rant here; I'm just a little surprised that this question was even asked.

Immo, I understand that this is from your own experience, and I'm not attacking you or anything. It's just that a lot of guys see women that fulfill a popular stereotype, and then assume that all women are that way (this goes for race and religion, as well).

Of course we do! What woman in her right musical mind would not want gear? I've only been playing seriously for a few months and I've already acquired a practice amp, a 4x10 half-stack, a pretty decent 1x15 with a head, and two basses (a newer Squier and an '04 Schecter). My wish-list is as long as my arm. I rarely pass a weekend that I don't meander through at least a pawn shop or three just to see what they have hanging on the wall that I can play around with.

I have GAS for tech stuff, too. New electronics and gadgets are always fun to shop for. Those - and shoes. And, the reason why we need one more pair of black heels is because they're all different.

Not sure about women bass players, but you mean you've never heard the wife muttering about "Have breath, must shop!".

Trust me, women bass players get GAS just like men. (a LOT of it is due to Talkbass, dang it!) I also agree with SassyS, this is such an odd question. Speaking of Mars, the OP sounds like he lives there.

Don't know about bassists, but I know about violinists and their bows.

Note that my wife is the one who asked me: "When are you going to get a new bass?"

Lately, just about every time I've visited my repair guy with a new case in hand and exclaimed "Look what I got on Ebay!" he's asked if I'm planning on opening a music store.

I also have sizable collections of shoes and guitar straps.

I don't know any female bass or guitar players, but I do know several dancers. I know Imelda Marcos set the record for shoes with 3000, but hey she was representing the country at all manner of shindigs. So it was sort of her job. But I've personally witnessed more than one woman with 500+ pairs of shoes with purses and dresses to match! EVERY closet in the house filled to capacity with portable racks in the basement! Two identical setups with two different women so it can't just be a fluke!

That kind of Gas makes my puny 20 bass collection look like I'm some kind of shopping beginner! (And by the way neither of these women spent enormous sums of money to get these collections! Which is why I learned to "shop like a woman!")

Eh, I think they are beneficial over the long run, too--they make the stuff after you get back from vacation more bearable. I will agree that the female part of the statement was weird.

Oh yes, I have GAS! There are two basses I've wanted for a long time and I don't even know if they still make them since I gave up wanting them. I wanted the Luna Dragon and Phoenix basses. Slender girlie basses, wicked-@$$ dragon and phoenix inlays. I dont know why I wanted BOTH, prolly cuz I couldn't decide which I liked better. I'd also love a few other basses I saw. Funny cuz I only have 2 hands and can only play one at a time. Also I rarely play since I'm not in a band anymore and I'm so busy.

Still, I'm always game for wandering around music stores and sampling all the gear as if I actually have money!

I'm happy with my stack and don't want to change.

I also love techie gadgets, iPhone apps, purses, gym shoes and I have a collection of tiny tea sets.
