Do you avoid buying the usual suspects when you buy pedals?

Why don't you use the "Usual Suspect" Pedals?

  • Almost everything mass produced generally sucks

I'll buy whatever it takes to achieve my goals, irrespective of who manufactures it...but fwiw, I almost never look at BOSS pedals when I'm trying to find something to do what I need. Maybe I'm missing out on some cool boxes, but I'd be perfectly happy going to my grave as a guy who didn't own any BOSS pedals

(...well, other than that BOSS BF-2 that someone gave me >25 years ago, and that subsequently got stolen 3 years later)

I'm just looking for that perfect sound in my head.
If I want a pretty common sound, then i'll just go for a well known brand most of the time, like MXR, EBS, EHX or that kind of stuff.
But I really like those rare boutique pedals, with weird sounds that you can't find anywhere else, like Devi Ever, Subdecay, Dwarcraft Devices, and that kind of stuff.
Sometimes, it's also a matter of quality, like for my Darkglass BK7. I couldn't find a better overdrive for me anywhere else.

Do you avoid buying the usual suspects when you buy pedals?

I am not sure about 'usual suspects' but I like buying from small builders if possible and local ones...as long as the quality holds up and they make what i am looking for.

Started out buying the boss and digitech because theyre cheap and theyre work horses. They hold up. Then started chasing other sounds. Then just wanted to try about everything i saw. Now i have a full blown pedal addiction.
Told my girlfriend i was looking to change bass strings, and she said something along the lines of 'whats it matter? You never play normal bass anyways' ha!

Part of it to support some guy working in his basement. People like Pigtronix and HBE are coming up with cool toys.

I even have a MSLP delay reverb pedal that is cool.

I don't drink much, don't gulf and don't smoke.

I have to have something foolish to spend my money on.

That BF-2 is a cool flanger. And Boss delays always seem to do more than just delay.
