Do you believe in life elsewhere?

Calvin+and+Hobbes+-+Intelligent+Life.jpg

If they were us from, say, 10,000 years in the future, there would be good reason not to contact us. I think that scenario may be just as likely as aliens being here.

I don't even believe you guys exist. I pretty sure you're all really one super hot chick at the computer trying to dupe me into a meeting where you will use me for your carnal pleasure.

Uhhh, when's the next GTG?

No one yet has explained how they moved blocks of stone that large up and into place, no theory yet builds them with the technology they possessed. Earth ramp? Nope, serpentine ramp? How to make the turns in a diminishing radius? Find the explanation that works with the tech they had...

Ramps and rollers and muscle are all they needed. Admittedly I'm not a construction engineer but I'm having a hard time seeing where the insurmountable problem is.

There was something on Discovery or History channel where they asked a guy from a rigging company about how he'd go about placing the blocks in the pyramids. He said some of them were too big, and would likely split due to their great mass if he were to try to lift them with a strap on a crane.

Still doesn't explain how they got them up there... Just a theory of their composition. No design using ramps & rollers gets 70 ton stones up there, let alone with such precision. But I understand the doubt... There is more than enough evidence, sightings from astronauts, pilots etc. for me to corroborate the physical evidence left on the earth, for others, maybe not...

The processes used to built the pyramids, cathedrals, Moai and any antique building are well known and easy to reproduce, given enough ressources and people.
It's a common misconception/urban legend that we have no idea how it was done.

uhm....there are stones in ancient egypt that can't be moved with today's super cranes. you got a couple million people and a couple miles of rope? cause it still would'nt move.

the problem with this is viewpoint is that it begs the question that a crane is a superior method of moving the stones

i'm not being flippant, just suggesting that much of the thinking put towards the construction of these wonders is influenced by the presence of current technology, which could be detrimental to understanding

Let's take pause and examine the situation. It is apparent the ancient Egyptians constructed gargantuan monuments using very primitive tools. Exactly how this happened is a mystery. Some people prefer to wait on scientists to figure this out, others tend to jump to the conclusion that intelligent beings from another world flew here (implying they are capable of the incredible feat of interstellar travel) and helped the Egyptians build the pyramids for no apparent reason. Oh, and said beings are not quite mentioned in detail in hieroglyphic records.

Which reaction seems more reasonable?

If life possibly exists somewhere else in the universe, then it is also possible that life does not exist anywhere else than on Earth. There is nothing arrogant about privileging that last alternative.

However the same cannot be said about someone who is absolutely convinced that anybody leaning more on the side of alternative #2 is arrogant!

Actually while typing, I’m thinking about my next Quote/signature:
“Sadowsky basses are unique; there is nothing close to them on Earth. Actually there is nothing that comes close to them in the entire universe for sure"!

I think that's the end of the argument right there... Now back to the topic at hand lol
This made my day :)

I wouldn't say it is arrogant to believe either way, really. Just uninformed. We don't have anything at all on which to base an opinion, so the only sensible view is to accept that at present we have no idea at all whether there is life anywhere else or not.

More data is needed before any sort of valid opinion can be adopted. Believing either way is at present pure guesswork or wishful thinking.
