Im starting it with shoes, find ones that fit and then they discontinue them. So buy 2 pair.

Almost embarrassed to say it, but I think I've become a bit of a collector.
I've got six Squier Mustangs, and two Fender P/J Mustangs.
They're all different though, and a couple are highly modified,
with two pairs of Mustang pickups.

I've been that way most of my life, with just about everything - and I have an overflowing 1500 sq ft shop to prove it.
How often did it pay off to have a duplicate (or two)? I'd estimate less than 1% of the time.
The good news is that age brings wisdom and I finally kicked the habit (mostly). Now I'm having fun selling off all that stuff as vintage - often for more than I paid for it in the first place!
I have only done it with my #1. I bought the Pharaoh Gold G&L L-1000 and it quickly became my #1. I loved everything about it. But then when I went to my backup, a '62 Fender Jazz, it was always different and I wanted to have a backup on stage that played and sounded the same as my #1 (plus I don't like to leave the aforementioned Jazz just sitting around clubs), so I ordered the Blueburst G&L. It's a little different because of the swamp ash body (the gold one is basswood) and the maple fretboard, but in general, when I pick up #1 and I pick up #2 I am getting the same feel and sound with both.
I do this with shoes and pants and tshirts.
With shoes if you have 2-3 pair you swap out every day each pair will last a lot more than 2-3 times as long because the inside of the shoe will have time to rebound and air out.
Also feels better when you put them on again. When you wear only 1 pair of shoes all the time, sometimes by Friday morning it doesn't feel like your insoles even had time to cool down yet.

Only with strings and other stuff that may break down suddenly like tubes.
I've never understood the point of having two (or more) identical basses. I'd much rather spend my money on a DIFFERENT type of bass. It's not like you'll never find another P-bass if your P-bass breaks down. And even if yours is an exceptionally good instrument there are no guarantees that an identical P-bass, same model, same year, same color, will be as good. In fact, if it's a mass manufactured Fender there's a good chance it won't be.
Having said that, I do own several P-basses but they're all very different. Different models, different pickups, different strings, different colors, even different manufacturers. But I own lots of other basses too and I didn't buy my second P-bass before I had all the other classics covered (J-bass, Rick, Danelectro, Stringray, Höfner) + some other stuff like various shortscales and hollowbodies. I want variety, not the same thing over and over again.
The same goes for shoes. I may have two pairs of the same model but if I do they won't be the same color. I wear clothes, not a uniform.

Yes, when I find something that I really, really like I buy dupes especially if it's a consumable. I have done this with basses that I really, really like and were on tremendous sale and were soon to be unavailable. Funny this though, I wound up selling the dupes. Maybe I'm a dupe. Who knows!

My dad was kind of an anti-hoarder. He probably had undiagnosed OCD. He was really fanatical about keeping things clean and not owning things he didn't use.
I inherited some of that. If I can't come up with a specific reason to have two of something (this bass is for jazz and blues, this bass is for rock) then I don't buy the second one.
With that said, I can be pretty creative in coming up with a reason to "need" another

I have 3 PJ's, all different, but they all have the same pickups, Hipshot Xtenders, and strings. And two are black. And they all sound the same. Why? 2 reasons...
1. If one goes down for the count, I have two more.
2. I got good deals on all of them.
3. Because I can.

I will match color combos that I like. But all my basses have a specific purpose. I normally don't take spares to shows.

not for basses, even tho i have 2 precisions, 2PJ's and a jazz they will have all different pickups/strings/hardware etc.... Household items that inevitably break or food or clothes/tools i might get several... i do own two red lawnmowers tho, but one is 5hp the other 8hp...lol

If I have 2 of the same its because I like the way that they sound with different string types. As in one P Bass with flats and the other P Bass with rounds. It's just impractical to be changing strings and doing set ups all the time.
