I prefer instrumental music, but I do appreciate good, clever or emotive lyrics. Sometimes I get a pleasant (or not so pleasant) surprise when an instrumental song I love Is re-recorded by someone who adds unrelated lyrics to it:

I don't care at all. I don't want to sound snobbish, but I have a master's degree in literature, and when you've spent hours dissecting something like T.S. Eliot's Invalid Link Removedor Invalid Link Removed, you realize that most lyrics are crap. I guess it's like me getting all excited over a bass line that would probably make someone with a formal music background roll their eyes.

That said, David Berman's lyrics on the Purple Mountains album are truly a masterpiece.

Song writing is not poetry. It has different goals and requirements.
