Do you ever put yourself to sleep?

I used to record my practices, still do sometimes. I think it was Kieth Richards that said he didn't record his ideas because if they were really good then he would remember them. probably many have said that. I tend to agree. But like you I think my best ideas come when I'm sleep deprived and going with the flow, which can make it hard to remember them later.

I will noodle on occasion or when trying out some new gear. If I stumble on something I like, I will repeat it a few times to burn it into my temporary memory, then record it on my phone or Zoom H5 before it is purged from the temporary memory. If I was smart, I would just record the entire sessions and review them later...

I grew up in the 60's and 70's - In 2019 I'm still slightly growing. Late at night when my wife is asleep and my son is playing xbox -- I grab one of my basses and plug into the Ampeg Rocket. For some reason I always have to play some of Dazed and Confused - The Ocean - and Pink Floyd Money. Then I start creating my own incredible riffs and runs. As I slip into tiredness I think that I really should be recording this because it is really quite good and I will never remember it tomorrow. Then I get drowsy - my bass gets heavy - and I go to bed. I repeat this over and over - I dub myself the Groundhogs Day Bass Player. Do any of you experience this? I'm considering afternoon caffeine.

And -- if I get several likes each time I post it I will soon be one of the most likeable guys on TB.:)

Only counts if you post at 10:51 pm each day!

Back in the early 80's, I fell asleep on stage, standing up twice. a slow song and working to many hours did me in.

I did a blues gig in a little bar once and one of our friends who was a stone rock n roller and really disliked blues (but loyal) and also liked to drink sat on the floor in front of us and would fall sleep with 30 seconds after we started a tune then wake up and hoot n holler like mad when the song ended and then fall sleep again within 30 seconds again, on and on, it was one of the funnest things I've ever seen. This was about 20 years ago and I still bring it up sometimes when I see him, he stopped drinking a while ago.

I fell asleep once.... at a gig.

We were doing a 5 nighter, I was working full time during the day downstacking (old school) TVs from trailers at a warehouse during the day. Dirty, and hard work. Needless to say by the end of the week I was burning out.
Friday came and I was looking forward to being able to crash for a couple hours before we played that night....however...

I get a call at work, we need to play happy hour from 4:30 to 6:00.

I scoot to the gig after work in dirty jeans steel toe boots, a crusty flannel shirt and covered in dust.

My gear for that gig, on old JBL (Sugar scoop) 7 foot folded horn, I lay down on stage, put my head into the cabinet and close my eyes.

They told me I was playing fine, but I'm convinced I was semi conscious and intermittently sleeping. It was enough of a breather where I could get cleaned up for the 4 hours later, and made it through ok.

I expected to get a lot of flack, but the bar owner, and the crowd, were convinced by the band that it was schtick, that the band had a player that put himself into some kind of a self hypnosis to play.

It wasn't long and I convinced myself that it was either the job or the band. At that time... it turned into the job. ( The dudes in the band were addicts that couldn't control their problems anyway.)

I've never ever grabbed my bass with the idea of it helping me fall asleep, but maybe that's a way for me to get some practice in.

I conk out pretty easily; if I'm having trouble, I'll read.

I have, however, come close to nodding off at a rehearsal or two.
