Most places will give us a predetermined tab or deep discounts.

Now, we had a show in Charleston S.C. in June that was fantastic . They provided a separate area for the bands to relax in, with a doorman, a couple never-ending coolers of beer, as well as waitstaff who were consistently checking in and would bring us anything else we wanted...all comped.

It wasn't a 'fancy' place by any means, but they really treated the talent well. Even though the pay wasn't much due to a light crowd, I'd have no issues playing there again.

Used to be standard practice in the bars here, now with the tighter economy not so much.

We still get treated pretty well at most places though, probably cause we pull good crowds, we tip well and encourage our crowds to do the same. And we keep it sane, i.e. one beer/drink per set per man, or less.

But as an automatic perk, it has definitely gone away.

I usually expect to get a drink or two comped for the evening, but when I moved to the DC area from Colorado, I was surprised to get a tab at the end of the night, let alone a full tab.

Now it seems you need to ask up front to make sure what your discount/complimentary drinks are. Definitely not a given anymore.

It's usually a drink a set. I almost always drink draft beer, but others have been known to drink top shelf.

The loss of the free drinks had a lot to do with us dropping a venue we'd played at for years. I don't mind paying cost for a draft beer, but $5.00 a pop? I don't think so. We told them that policy was fine by us, but the band was going to have to charge them an extra $200.00 a weekend. The bar manager got a little indignant and said "Well, that's the deal, take it or leave it." We finished out our bookings there, and filled our calender with higher paying gigs that comped drinks.

When the bar manager called about booking us in 2010, he was told that we were booked for the year. (The drummer is lazy and does all the booking for the year in November.)

We may be renegotiating in a few months, we'll see.

It depends on the establishment. Some comp, some run a tab, others make you pay for everything.

Doesn't matter to me because I don't usually drink. If I do it's only two over the course of the night. What I do is smoke 1/2 a joint before the first set then about 1/2 way through the gig I'll go back out and finish the other half.

+1 on the nuggets... great way to keep the alcohol consumption down. We have a set number of pitchers of Yuengling we book for my band. The weekly monday night jam we get 7 pitchers and everyone gets an entree. Most of the gigs in Atlanta you can get drink tickets, or just throw the bartender 10 bucks tell him you're in the band and ask for whatever. Any sodas are free. For bar/restaurant gigs, I just tell them we play better on a full stomach and they offer food.

I don’t drink during the gig, I just have a good enough time without it. Also at some shows I started running karaoke on breaks for the patrons, and I sing a couple, so I want to stay a bit sharp. After the show, someone usually buys me a drink and we chill for a while before tearing down.

I’m not really even sure what the others so, but I’m pretty sure the guitar player negotiates one drink per set for everyone, and patrons regularly buy us drinks.

One I know spends some money but he drinks more,

Drummer brings a flask and might buy or get another drink or two, but he stays basically lucid through the night, then when he and I get to my house (he lives walking distance and we car pool) we get plastered, unless there’s a gig the next night.

:)
