hi everyone. im an amateur bass player from turkey.


I'm having trouble finding the bass effect that starts at 3.32 in this song. looks like some kind of wah but i don't think it's just wah.
Since it's a complicated bassline, I'm having trouble transcribing without using the right effect.

I'm not hearing any very strong effect on that bass part, sounds like the highs are rolled off, played fingerstyle. Maybe slight chorus? Nice groove though.

I'm hearing a mild envelope filter in certain places in the line.



Envelope filters, or "auto-wahs", produce a similar notch-filter effect as a wah-wah pedal, but instead of a treadle, the effect is triggered and controlled by the input signal strength. So, laid back and grooving, you get a "heel-down" tone that rolls off the highs, but as you dig in, you start triggering "toe-down" swells that sweep up to the treble and back. It's extremely common in funk-type fingerstyle grooves.

As used in your linked track, it's tastefully subtle, but I'm hearing that tell-tale "ow" tone on the attack of higher-pitched fills in the line. 99% sure you're hearing envelope filter.

That's what I was going to guess just from the description, and expected to hear it, but really didn't - maybe because my high frequency hearing is shot - subtleness is often lost on me.

Wow! That is a nice tune, thanks for the tip, I will look for more. Fun bass line. I really enjoyed the tune and listened a couple times. His voice is cool, smoky. And the surf reverb guitar. Great rhythm section.

I also hear what may be an envelope filter (auto wah) but it is mixed pretty low. It's a nice tone. It reminds me of sounds I can get from my Seamoon pedal. The sweep I'm hearing is pretty tight, it is not a deep range. And it is blended low so it is subtle enough that it could possibly be a chorus but my guess is envelope filter.
The real "tell" is the last 10 seconds when the band fades and the bass stands out a little more on the higher notes.

Someone else take a guess. Listen at about 4'30 because the bass is up front.

I originally said Envelope Filter/Autowah. But I think you may be right with Phaser since it really does not seem to be reacting to the player dynamics. An envelop filter or autowah will open and close in response to your plucks. In contrast a Phaser will have a periodic sweep where it changes continually from dark to open sounding and the repeats.

I believe there is a fair amount of compression as well.



Phasers and Flangers typically respond primarily to higher frequencies. Since the bass tone on this track is fairly dark the effect is subtle.
