hehe, nah i don't need Praise or applause, its just something I enjoy doing for myself, even in an empty auditorium, just standing on a stage is inspiring to me.

For me, music without listeners is not fulfilling. I had to take time off a few times for family issues (surgeries, having babies, etc) and life lost a lot for me. My wife is beginning to get it which is great, I can be an ass if I am not gigging. It's become a big part of my identity and it is where I get a lot of my confidence.

Yeah, for me its more about giving it all I have... We had a really bad show in high school, a horrible marching show set to the tunes of Van Halen... and nobody in the crowds ever enjoyed it except me haha.

Its hard to explain, but even performing with no appreciation is fun, like one of the posters above said.


When it's good, it's very good. When it's bad, it's still mildly enjoyable.

Our physical bodies need that.

But, if that is all you are, then I would guess everything else is a want.

Personally, I need more than food, water, shelter and clothing. Why do we even play music? Or more to the point, why are we even here at all? If all we are is our physical selves, we are really just taking up space for no good reason.

I can't disagree that nothing is more greedy than a human, yet a want is still a want even if it perceived as a need. Greed, by its very definition, is not a need.

Playing music, listening to music is all well and good and, it can produce very positive feelings however it lacks the necessary prerequisites that describe a need.

I think, only in the case of humans. Can something other than the basic needs of an animal (Food, water, shelter) become a need. But of course everybody has their own opinion of these matters :smug:

I dont think that now that I've tasted the forbidden fruit I could go without for long. I was stressed out and angry these past few days, had rehearsal today, now I feel fulfilled and happy :)

I do like to perform. Working as a teacher is pretty much a public performance every day, and I enjoy that, too.

I like playing bass even more, though I'm much more comfortable in front of a class than on stage.

However, my daughter's condition has made it all but impossible for me to commit to a regular gigging situation. Hopefully that will change some day. I envy those of you who get to play out regularly. Rock on!

But no, I don't guess I NEED to perform.
