I started on upright and migrated from that over to electric several years later. So I wasn’t a guitarist first. And I’m still not, although I can play one.

I think having enough familiarity with another instrument to at least be able to play simple songs with it is never a bad thing. Anything that broadens your awareness of what’s out there makes you a better musician overall.

I play both guitar and bass. My top 2 guitar influences are Stevie Ray Vaughan and Brian Setzer (they're not as different as you may think...lots of crossover licks). So personally, I'm a mediocre blues guitarist and a mediocre rockabilly guitarist, but good enough to fool people into thinking I'm good at it. I'm a bassist in one band, and lead guitarist in another. As a hobby, I tinker around with jazz guitar (mainly solo stuff like Joe Pass, but not even remotely as good as him) and classical guitar. I love them all!

But at the end of the day, I enjoy bass the most. I just love what it does in the band, even if the general audience doesn't have a clue as to what I'm doing.

I've always kept a guitar and a keyboard around for songwriting/recording purposes, but I'm no master of either. One of the beauties of digital recording is that you can take as many cracks at it as you need. I have a lead on one song that was done in eight sections lol.

When people ask me I tell them I'm bass player as that's what I trained on and have gigged the most on. But, the truth of the matter is, I use an acoustic primarily for songwriting and most of the time and that's where I put my efforts. No matter how good or bad the songs are the experience is more fulfilling to me. I do enjoy playing bass when working up songs with others and, occasionally, the experience of playing live can be transendental but the effort to get to that point hardly seems worth it most of the time. In other words: very low ROI IMHO/E.

When playing an electric guitar I can honestly say that, yes, it's boring. So much so, I've actually nodded off more than once. Seriously. :roflmao:

I'm a much better bassist that guitarist, although I'm not sure that's saying much! I, too, would love to play drums, but I only get to play "little" percussion instruments. I have a shakira, a djembe, etc. Wait, why don't I have a cowbell? I must remedy this...:roflmao:

First, I was a guitar player (and have been for a long time). Then I was a bass player (and play bass in front of an audience more than my other instruments). Then I was a keyboard player (and achieved my best success as a musician doing it).

It's all good!

8 years ago, after a decade of wrist issues, I decided to start playing again, and figured that if I concentrated on one thing, I'd be better off - I was literally starting from ground zero, and couldn't play anything worth a damn at that point.. As the world needs bass players, and the bands I had been in as the bass player seemed to do better than the other ones, bass it is. So, I now only play 2 instruments:

1) Bass guitar
2) Fretless bass guitar

We're definitely not boring. It often takes 2 guitarists to be as exciting as one bass player.

I'm one of the guys that picked guitar after playing bass for a few years to help me to better understand songwriting.
It worked for the most part. I wish I would’ve messed with guitar more. But after all, I’m a bassist. That’s what I love, that’s where my passion is. Guitar is so boring to me. Playing it I mean. I do fiddle with it from time to time.

I believe all musicians should be able to play more than one instrument, but that's just my opinion. My first instruments were piano and various wind instruments. Although I could play them I was never really great at them. Then I began to learn the guitar. I wanted to be a guitar player but somehow always wound up on bass because I had one and guitar players were a dime a dozen. I grew to really like playing bass and now it is my main instrument. I still play guitar and keyboards on recordings produced in my project studio. So to answer the OP's question; Yes, I play the guitar but I wouldn't call it boring. ;-)
