If I had a Mexican or, Gasp!, Chinese bass that I liked as well as my American basses, I'd sure as heck play 'em.

I've been messing with this Traben Array Limited I got, setting it up and everything. I haven't played it through my big rig yet, but I will tomorrow night. It now plays great. If it sounds great, it may become my number 2. I'm not sure where it's made, but certainly not in the US.

A friend of mine used to play a Traben and it sounded fantastic! I never tried it, but it looked like it was a joy to play.

Mine wasn't really playable when I got it. I thought it had a plastic nut that was cut wrong. Turns out it was a brass nut which was aluminum plated and was cut right, but the first fret was high. A little filing, lower the bridge saddles, install Blue Steels, adjust truss rod, intonate and she now plays very nicely. I played it through a smaller rig I have and it sounded really gritty. Hard to tell if I'm going to really like it until I hook it up to my main rig.

Current basses, MI-blank (to the best of my knowledge):

Carvin Icon - MIA
Fender Aerodyne - MIJ
Thompson Upright - MI-China?
Univox "Lucy" circa 1970 - MI-??

In the past, I've had a Ric, another MIJ Fender, a Washburn (not sure where they're from), and a Cort (also not sure).

I've never really thought that much about it, as you can tell from my uncertainty. I pretty much buy a bass that sounds good, plays good, and that I can afford.

I'm American and voted "no."

Lakland 55-01 - Korea
MTD Kingston - Korea
MTD Artist - Czech Republic
Ibanez ATK-305 - Indonesia

I would love to own MIA counterparts to my MTDs and Laklands (among others), but I don't have enough money for that. I have a great MIA Carvin, but I haven't touched it in forever because it's a 4-string, so I didn't count it :(

On the bright side, my cabs (Aguilar) and preamp (Eden) are MIA, as is my car :D

I think there are good intentions here but, unless you are really looking for genuine ethnicity, I would have said something along the lines of where someone lives. ie, do you live in the US or elsewhere.
Take someone like Abe Laboriel, he was born in Mexico City, so technically he is not American, but he lives in the US. I do this kind of analysis for my accounting day job so you have to be careful with how questions are worded as your data may be skewed.
Just something for your consideration because as the old saying goes, the devil is in the details!

This European dude seems to have a huge preference for US and more specifically Californian stuff (Alembic, Fender, Mesa, Morley)
Come to think of it, almost all my gear is from the US of A :hiding:

Non US: T-rex Fuel tank jr. (Denmark) AKG WMS300 (Austria) Zoom 505 (Japan) Korg Pitchblack (Japan/Korea?) and TC Electronics G-sharp (Thailand)

For basses it is stricktly US, though the Fender ('91 prodigy) is a "US polished" Mexican if I'm not mistaken...
No real Gas for non US (read: non Alembic) Basses here, just a weak spot for some Status, Chris Larkin and ESP models.
