That was that band. Another one I'm in would record live.

#3 is the correct answer. For me after however the song is recorded (all the other's parts locked in) I go back and do my final take.

#1. I've always felt great pressure recording my track separately. Even with the punch-ins.

Ideally, I think you start with #1, and then use that as the backing track for #2. Every now and then #1 will prove to be the perfect recorded expression of a particular artistic conception ... but usually re-tracks, overdubs, and punch-ins improve the product.

During lockdown, I did a lot of virtual church services which were #2, I greatly prefer #1 - a band of good musicians playing off of each other, is much more alive sounding than one at a time recording.

Even when doing it one at a time, I ended up going with the first or second take 99 % of the time - if you know the material, later takes might have less mistakes, but the magic is there early, and quickly dissipates.

You need a really good drummer to do #1, IMO, whether they play with or without a click.

You need a good drummer regardless. #2 can't save a bad drummer - people try to do that by lining things up with the grid; that doesn't give you what a good drummer does.

Learn how to post a voting poll. ... But for me it"s #1. Lay it down live if everybody is up to it then over dub later. Some guys are better at and need less or sometimes more time.

I record bands all the time. Overdubbing you can really zero in on Tone, intonation, groove...
When recording everyone you're just trying to get through the tune without anyone f**king up too seriously.

If the engineer can isolate the instruments well enough, I greatly prefer tracking the rhythm section live. Much better feel, more interactive, more spontaneous, IME.

I've sometimes recorded one instrument at a time--it wasn't my call--but the result has usually felt a bit less inspired.
