Do you remember your first gig?

We lived in a little T-shaped neighborhood in San Mateo from 1987 through 1997. There was only one way in and out, no way to drive through it. So we rarely got stray cars there. We had block parties once a year for about 6 of the 10-years we lived there. Was really nice. Never see block parties anymore though.

Yeah - block parties were a really awesome and special part of Americana history - that died.

My first real gig, wish I still had the pics. Spring 1979, age 19 playing guitar in a jazz-rock band outdoors @ Moorpark College in Moorpark CA. We all had pretty good gear, I had a black Les Paul and Fender Twin, bassist had a fretless J-bass and a Peavey rig with 2 2x15" cabs, drummer had a Rogers set, keyboardist had a Rhodes and a Moog Sonic 6 synth. Did stuff like Stanley Clarke, Tony Williams Lifetime, Brand X and some of our own tunes. Got paid $25 each. Fun times.

My first real gig....like it was yesterday. It was 1996, and I was the singer/bass player in a really terrible punk/psychobilly band. I say terrible in hindsight, though it was incredibly fun. I was 18, a baby really. Looking back, it's hard to believe I had the balls to pull it off given my limited abilities at the time. That's the benefit and enthusiasm of youth carrying the day. My drummer, who was older than me and had been around the block set everything up. Booked us opening for a good touring band, with some very popular local punk bands on the gig as well. The club was your typical dive.

The show was very well attended. I was super nervous. Like heart pounding inside my head nervous. That gave way to adrenaline after a couple of songs, and I remember that feeling of being hooked afterwards. I can still remember so many details about the night, except for the set we played! The only detail I recall was our guitar player breaking a string, and switching to my guitar that we brought as a backup.

That club is vacant lot now.

I was 10 years old and my brother took me to a house party to play keyboards. I played about 15 tunes that I knew and everyone got up to dance, I was hooked!

First bass gig I was 13 playing a concert in Melbourne to 2000 people, I had picked up on bass for the purpose of teaching my brother to play some bass and I was hooked on those low notes from that time.
