For me, it's gotta be a little of both. I really could play without effects, but certain songs really do call for a certain effect. I play in two praise bands, and sometimes we play children's songs, which I would say an envelope filter or wah pedal are called for (it makes them move!). Other songs, nothing is really called for, it's just fun to turn them on.
