I recently went with fives, I like the fours for slapping but given time who knows mabe I too will make the switch completely.

Does a 5 make your 4 redundant?

Don't ask me why, but still love the 4's and I rather prefer them.
I usually play with a 5 (have 3 of them) because i play in two covers bands and for several musics I need the B.
But I always take a 4 with me, just because.......because! Can't explain.
I have 4 4 string basses and, actually my gas is pushing me to buy another 4 strings.

Me too, I mean I'm really trying to incorporate 5s into my gig life, but it's just not the same as ripping up a 4 to me!
Never played a five, so I honestly can't tell you. I'm perfectly happy with my fours as of now, but I would never rule out owning a five, and I suppose it's entirely possible I could end up favoring it over the four. Someone wanna loan me their fiver so's I can find out?(preferably a P-5 if ya got one) 
I would doubt that.
And, No. a 5 doesn't make my 4 redundant.
I have no hatred for a 5, really. I can play them as well as my 4s. I used to own quite a number of them. I'm pretty sure that there's a time that I owned nothing but 5s. Now, the only 5 that I have now it's a Dean Pace upright.
But I love my 4s. I always come back to 4. I feel more at home with them. And, I'm pretty sure the 4s are here to stay.

If your 4 is not redundant, then I guess it is dundant.
I have a 5 and a dundant 4. Which is no less dundant because I have a short scale.
Maybe because I have a shortie the last 4 inches of the 4-string and the last 5 inches of the 5-string are both redundant.

I actually own the exact same model of bass in a 4 and a 5 string variety, and for some reason I keep going back to the four.
I play more than a few songs that need that fifth string, so I'll play it, but something about it doesn't feel quite right. I think it has something to do with the odd number of strings.
Maybe I'll get a 6 one day and test that theory.

Yes, but not really. a 4 string naturally will have a different tone, but I can do anything on a 5 that I can on a 4 string. So its not needed. IMO at least
this thread got really funny. won't be able to find 4's in 5 years? hardly anyone plays 4's anymore? hahahaha!
I pretty much play 5 string basses exclusively although I could get by on a 4 string on some of the gigs I play. That said I do enjoy playing 4 strings - it feels easier on my small hands and just feels natural to me. But I miss having the 5 string if I play 4 strings for too long and I just gravitate naturally to 5 string basses again.

I actually think the tread is going but to 4's now-a-days.. every where I look I see top players play a 4 and a few years ago it was everyone was playing 5+
For me its more of having different basses for different tones. I have my Pbass and am placing my order in for a custom Jaydee 5 string with in the next few weeks

I have a passive 4 (J) and an active 5... very different tones so I feel like they aren't redundant.
I have little problem with that concept... the more high-end four-strings for "Steal Prices" on the Used Market for us, right Jimmy?
