Does Anyone Dabble On The Dark Side?

I ran karaoke for awhile, just as a fill in, and I still feel pretty slutty for having done it.

"Hey, let's give up a big hand for the fantastic performance of a guy who couldn't sing, doing a song I hope I never hear again! C'mon, give it up for him, folks! And it's not too late to come up here and do an even worse job than he did, on an even more loathesome song... we have books and pencils at every table, where people haven't stolen them already!"*

I was talking about dablling on the dark side, not entering the depths of Hell.

I used to DJ and part-run a couple of metal club nights during college. Was fun, and you could zone out and pay attention to "the view" a bit more than when playing an instrument. Many happy mamm.. sorry memories ...

I've DJed off and on over the past 20 years... Overall, I've spun a wide variety of music from swing and novelty tunes from the 1930's and 40's, rockabilly & western swing, surf, 1960's psychedelic and maximum R&B, classic glam rock, post-punk, new wave, deathrock, batcave, Britpop, garage punk, trip hop, electropop, indie rock, etc. Of course the genre(s) I spin depends on the specific event...

I'm of the old school where the DJ is there to bring lots of tunes and provide an appropriate variety of them for the occasion; *not* to do their best impression of a greatest hits compilation CD for whatever genre the event is themed around... For me, it's all about the MUSIC, which was written and recorded by various talented people other than myself; not about posturing up there and doing silly gimmicks with the DJ rig as if I'm the star.

I last DJed on March 17 as a guest DJ for an event in San Francisco at a small club, and it was mega fun; it was the first time I had done it in a few years, and it looks like starting in June I may be doing it on at least a monthly basis, spinning mostly post-punk and new wave stuff. And I love playing requests, as long as they are appropriate for the musical theme of the event. Here's what I spun last time:
