Does anyone else not "get" fancy restaurants

Oh, if this threag were any more heartwrenchingly
beautiful, I would just cry ...

BTW, when I went to Snn Antonio, NJL rated the
restaurants by the 'drip' factor, as we all know, as least
all of us in the know, who have read 'Kitchen Confidential'
and who are 'Hush, Hush, and in the the know', is that
we, in the food biz, make all that foodshiiiiit, taste great
with a lot of salt, tons of butter and all that stuff you would
NEVER eat at home.

The 1/2 pound of butter on you pasta wasn't free, so what
are you complaining about?

jazzbo, you almost made me cry.

Beautiful, truly beautiful. Words to live by.

Food is life. Live it well.

Thank you for the kind words. What can I say, I love dining.

Something I didn't mention, my lady and I really get a chance to connect during a three hour dinner. We laugh and talk and really get to have a wonderful conversation, it's an amazing experience.

And don't take that the wrong way Gard, you'll have the same sooner than you know it!

j-bo, no, I can't take that the wrong way. The best memories of "that time" were the long dinners and just talking for hours. It actually has happened a few times since, but not with a permanent companion.

I love going out to dine as well....but it's a social thing for me, I can't do it alone. If I'm alone, I'll just eat at home.

I was in New York about a week ago visiting relatives. We went into Manhattan once, tourist style. A cousin of ours took us to a fancy (stereotypical Italian) restaurant. Its name was something to the effect of "Gino's".

I don't really understand the appeal of these places. The menu was very limited. There simply weren't many options, and the prices were ridiculous. (and unjustified) I got some tortellini for $15. It was pretty good, but the portion was very small, less than 1/2 of what I'd get in one of those sealed plastic boxes you get at the grocery tortellini. It tasted pretty good; about on par with the grocery store tortellini, and better than canned ones. It cost $15 for enough to serve a child, and I'm going to go so far as to debate wheather it even tasted as good as the grocery store stuff. Also, the bread tasted weird.

Is there anyone else who'd just rather go to IHOP?

edit: btw, I know that I'm an an uncultured slob! :)

In Italy, I had a pizza, a big salmon spaghetti plate + an ice cream for 17$??? :D
It was nice, sorry you paid so much! :(
But manhattan is a very touristic place no??
They will told you that pastes are hard to export to USA! (perhaps...)

I guess it's all about your philosophy concerning life.

Me ??? I'd prefer to live just 60 years to the fullest hedonism I can manage rather than eating at junk joints so I just might have enough money to live 90 years wearing Depends and wind up being a burden on my siblings.

And I'm well on my way towards cashing out of this world in the former scenario.

Heh, well it wasn't just pasta. There was also mandatory appetizers and encouraged deserts. I'm not gonna bitch about the appetizers (antipasto etc) because I don't like any of the stuff they had, as far as I know. I'm pretty sure I tried what i got and gave it to my mom. The $15 was just for the main course.

That's cool, bro. If it was bad, it was bad. If you "only" got burned for 15 bucks in the City, you have plenty of room to go before you can really bitch about it though! Some of the best food I ever got there was from sidewalk vendors, for maybe a couple of bucks. Hanging out noshing with a friend on a park bench or whatever can be just as rewarding as one of those intimate dinners Jazzbo mentioned.

Did you catch any of the music stores, or a show, by any chance?

Someday if I ever make it out there (its rediculous how Ive managed to not make it out there yet), lets grab us some sushi.

I hear you're a fan and Im fond of the stuff myself.

I like trying new foods any chance I get. The less I know about whats in any specific roll the better it sounds to me.

Peace
Nick

Yet another TBer succumbs to the irresistible lure of Bass Central and Fuji Sushi.

:smug:

Nick, dude...you're less than 2 hours away, get in the Nick-mobile Saturday about noon-1pm, drive down here, hang at the store for a few, and we'll go see how many different rolls we can work through at 5! Don't gimme no "I gotta study" crap, just DO IT!

:D

Hey, I just wanna clear up something just in case. I have nothing against upscale restaurants, restaurants in NYC, and I'm not trying to say Gino's represents all upscale places to eat. I reread my post and I'm kinda giving off that impression. That wasn't my intentino at all. I know there are many who much prefer the taste/experience provided at pricier places. I also know that I don't like the food that much probably because I'm not cultured/sophisticated enough yet.

The Nick-mobile is only the Nick-mobile when Im visiting the parents since they pay for my gas and issurance it's gonna stay there untill they decide Ive been a good boy.

Fortunately for me, Ive got this nice big dorm room to myself. Unfortunately, there's no-one with a car to steal.

Nick (Lonelyjazzbass) and I were talking about making a trip to BC in the fall though.

If I'm paying, I don't get them. On a serious note, the owners of Paramount Studios took the band to a steakhouse on Sunset Blvd. and we ran up a $900+ tab! The bottled water was $20 a pop, and we ordered like 7 of them. As for the food, it was very good (aged steaks!) and the portions were great, but the prices! The producer, Darryl Swann, ordered some huge steak that was $67! When the bill came, the owners looked at it like is was "normal". Ahh, high society! As for NYC joints, I like Cafe Espaniol (sp?). EXCELLENT food. It's near Washington Square Park, and Apache West Indian Cafe in Bed Sty in Brooklyn. Ooh, I forgot about Wo Hop in Chinatown!
Woodchuck you probably already know this, but the younger guys may not:- be wary of lavish spending by your record company. It all ends up on te list of recoupable costs, meaning the band ends up paying it back via ablum sales. Every record deal is different so it's not always like that, just be wary of it.

Trust me I know! BTW, it was on the studio owners. I suspect they overcharged us elsewhere!
