Does it really make a difference in the sound of the DB?
Thanks in advance. Never heard of this.

LOl thanks! Do you know of anyone that makes a soft tailgut that isn't nylon cord?Don't know much about it, but Velvet is essentially out of business (don't know if it has been officially declared yet) and on the link you shared Lemur no longe has it.

Absolutely, if you use a full set of gut strings.
So how about with Gut strings? G&D plain gut A&E wrapped gut?A few years ago these cords were all the rage for a while. Mike Pecanic sold one for fifteen bucks or so, it turned out to be this: Samson AmSteel Line, Rope
I liked what it did for the sound on one of my basses, which still has it on there. But I've gone back to braided steel cable for the other 2. As already mentioned, can be good for damping an overly bright bass.
Well the Kay bass I just bought has the solid steel gut. I am was going to have my luthier replace it with a cord gut while he is replacing a warped bridge with a new one. It's for sure strong enough for any kind of strings, if that's what you mean. About tone, that's something only you can judge, with your setup and your bass.
Personally I think the time is better spent on the music than all these kind of tweaks. Few people will hear the difference between tailgut materials, but everyone will hear if you play out of tune, or make poor note choices.
FWI... I wasn't put off by your reply. I am fairly new to DB and am taking in all info supplied. Just trying to make the right decisions the first time through.Sorry, didn't mean to sound like I was lecturing. Of course, you should try to make the best choice you can. If it's a Kay, I'd bet on braided steel. I hope your bass comes out great!
