Does anyone make a 5 string BEATLE bass?

I'm a multi-instrumentalist musician from a little, if not hugely controversial country called Panama. I've been playing professional since age 12, of my 60 something years. Heat & humidity down there are quite high yearlong, & combined with never been adjusted; the neck/truss rod, the Hofner Beatle bass ended up with an immense bow. Thus an impossible way to play comfortably with such a high string height action. Worst, the action was so high; that it actually detuned or went sharp as you played towards the 12th fret. Tuning it flat to compensate... yeah right. It sounded great, as what we hear in Paul's recordings, but no; I passed up the purchase. Then in Miami, early 80's; a music store owner offered me this used Rick really cheap, that had (maybe still has?); a symmetrical body shape. I recognized the model from the inner sleeve cover picture, of Deep Purple's Machine Head. The full picture of the bass is not part of the collage, but there's one with the bass player & part of the band; him standing with it. The front picture, has a Fender... Jazz, P bass?. As with the Hofner, it had a bad bow & worst; it was bent or twisted to one side. Took it to various luthiers to get fixed & even to a Cuban Tres maker. No fix. Really too bad, it had a beautiful blue-green color. The bow was not as bad as the Hofner & it was playable, as we did all we could to compensate for the fault. Both the Hofner & the Rick, have been designed with thin necks (wide wise & the thickness). Maybe necks made of ash or maple & if so, they rely on the truss rod to compensate for the thinness & possibly the softer wood. They also are set necks to the body, so the can't be removed easily or without damaging that wood bonding. >>> Big time error with this & any new guitar you buy, is not to adjust that vital truss rod as soon as you get it <<<. Plus periodically, say every year as needed or as temperatures & seasons change. That is what happened to the Hofner & Rick basses & combined with the high humidity of Panama & Miami, plus the high temps... well there you go. Next post, a little bit more on this & that. Oh... what I was able to find on Deep Purple's original Machine Head album, DEEP PURPLE Machine Head British Hard Rock Vinyl Record LP Record Collector's Information #vinylrecords ...

I've seen that same neck issue with Fender basses of friends in Panama, Miami, Houston, etc.; & even here where I've been living for quite a while; Austin Texas. Even as the Fenders are somehow thick necks, its the heat, humidity & lack of initial & long term neck adjustments; that are the culprits of a discomforting bass playing. That unpredictability or lack of stability of the necks, is the reason why Gibson mostly uses mahogany on their necks. It is a harder wood than ash or maple & not susceptible to weather condition variables. But the wood is expensive, going extinct (not sustainable at the current rates of abusive harvesting). Thus the high worldwide regulation on the wood species. Plus it takes quite awhile to grow to maturity. A year or 2 ago, I saw this beautiful transparent stripped green ESP strat style guitar, at my local south Austin Guitar Center. Yeap, maybe 3 years old & awful playing action. I deduced that it was never adjusted & for only 200 semoleums... or is it semolinas?. I bought it right away & next day; after adjusting it, WOW !. I even set the Floyd Rose so it could go up & down with the detuning tremolo. The first time I got that Gibson 5 string LP bass, I took it to Mark for a general make over. I already knew a lot about adjusting, modifying 7 building kit guitars, but since this is a unique bass; of which he confirmed, it was a good investment to take it to him. Mark is the official Fender & Gibson repair or warranty luthier in Austin & if you remember the ground braking Chiquita travel guitar, or many of ZZ Top custom guitars; that is part of Mark Erlewine continuing legacy. Here's his web site but watch it. It ain't the much secured https type url. Erlewine Guitars. Next, more of this & actually, those cheap as... eh, "affordable" Chinese bass guitars I have bought.

In '03 I saw this Ibanez AEB-305-LG-OP-01 5 string acoustic-electric piezo p/u bass guitar. I needed something with an acoustic edge, to give that feel to a Reggae band that Tchiya fronted. Good to for Salsa, Jazz or It came with bronze/cooper short scale strings. As with Savarez nylon strings, the bronze bass strings always leave me with a disgusting smell on my hands. How much I spent trying steel or nickel tapper end 5 strings sets that fitted or didn't over shoot those B, E & even the a Gotoh tuners?. A bunch !. So I made a rose wood extension piece, with holes for the strngs & butted against the original bridge. Fixed !, now I can use the nickel custom gauge strings I prefer; 125, 100, 85, 65 & 45. Ops !, it's past 12 am & this "manifesto' is getting long... if not tedious. Sorry, next time I'll tell you about the mod & adjustments I've done to the 2 Harmonias, the Kapok & the De Rosa acoustic/electric "big dreadnought" 5 string bass I have. But heck, there was an used AEB-305 for sale right here in '08. Currently there's one 4 stringer at reverb & as always... overpriced. The original AEB-305 was Korean & the new reissue is Chinese. Both still use short 32" scale & the Harmonia, Kapok & De Rosa are 34". Next time, maybe tomorrow; I'll finish starting with the huge issue with 5 string... the B string & the piezo transducer. I have been playing it for a few months now and it's my new favorite bass. The pickups are good, just VERY deep. I thought the Low B was weak until I ran it through a spectrum analyses then a bigger amp. HUGE fundamental. The low notes are not what they sound like through a practice amp. Records well too.View attachment 3758569 View attachment 3758570
