Does bass appearance matter for genre?

I'd say yes. I really can't see this bass going over at a country / western gig.

I once saw a country band where the guitarist played one of those old Roland G707 synth guitars that looked like this:

People loved their band, too.

I play in an oldies band, and though I mostly play Fenders now, for the first 4 years, I played the 4-string on the right:

Once in a while I'd get a comment about the whammy bar, but when I told them I didn't have to use it, I never heard another word about it.

However, it's not exactly a big stretch lookswise. A Millenium isn't a big deal either. There's no way I'd ever play a pink Explorer with that band, though. Sometimes you have to exercise common sense

If you like to please other people, yes, appearance matters, If you're gonna play metal, it's awkward to see you play with a mark hoppus fender bass, ain't I right? Or you gonna play for a, let's say a slow song, you can't play a bc rich warlock pointy ass bass. If you want a bass that can be all around, Color is a factor, I find a black les paul spec bass or a p/j bass can really be used in any occasion or scene. (pickguards too)

Appearance is also about not being noticed. Some well paying gigs require that you don't alarm the guests. Then you win them with your music. They don't pre think that you'll be too loud. You get word of mouth referrals and its nice.

Sometimes being an anarchist is just self defeating.
Wear & use what the gig requires out of respect for the folks that hire you. Why rebel when you want to play in front of people and get paid? (Not addressed to the OP or anyone in particular.)

Given a choice of basses to play I would play the one most appropriate sounding and visual for the gig. I wouldn't show for a blues gig backing a slide guitarist with a modern 6 string. That would be similar to showing up in a loud Hawaiian shirt.
