My opinion hasn't changed much in 2 years, I still think in most cases tone trumps looks, but you have to consider your audience. That said I have a bass on the way that I bought only for looks so it's not a hard and fast rule for me.

If the bass didn't look good, I probably would never know how it sounded.

I don't care what my bass looks like as long as it's 3ts, rw and tort. Oh, and it has to sound right as well.
To a certain degree yes. But all things being equal it not highest on my list.
For the most I tend to stick with the basics like black, white, natural, and sunburst.

It's extremely simple for me. If a bass looks unattractive or plain ugly to me, I wouldn't even consider it. It can play like the best bass in the whole world, I wouldn't care one bit. A bass needs to look good to me, otherwise I know I wouldn't want to keep it.
Seriously, there are so basses being made today that feel, play and sound good, why not pick something that looks good, too?

I'm shallow enough to say that yes it is very important. Obviously how it plays and sounds are the other two criteria that along with looks make the "big 3"
But that being said I really enjoy playing my Hofner Ignition Club bass even though I hate the "turd-burst" brown color.

Exactly. I call BS on people that say looks don't matter. Who picks up a bass to evaluate that they aren't drawn to?
Most of my basses are gorgeous (or better): However, I have a matte finish, unusually plain R bass 5er. It's incredible: balanced, even, one of, if not my best player out of 5 five stringers...that said, it is plain and it never
escapes me that it is. Otherwise, it would probably be my go to in every instance.

People who don't think looks matter probably wear fanny packs because of how convenient they are.
Not me! I have two Tbirds since last posting on this thread and I'm settled. Can't remember the last time I looked at basses. Oh sure I like that new Fender in that buttercream or whatever they're calling it. But with some slight mods the Bird just fits so well and I can't walk past it without picking it up. Not to mention, in a sea of P's and J's? People remember that guy with the weird bass.
I think looks fall into the ergonomy category for me in a way, so they are quite up in my priority list.
Finishes or colours are not in the looks category imo tho, that doesn't matter to me, or at least as much as how long the horns are, how thick the profile is, etc
