Does Metallica dislike writing/recording new material?

OP, did you not watch the documentary?????? I'm surprised they haven't done a suicide pact. They are the most emotional and sensitive bunch of "metal tough guys" I have ever seen. Granted, they have been through a lot. But DANG. Lighten up! It's only rock n roll.

(By the way, I wish them no harm whatsoever. I hope they all live to be a hundred and pass peacefully in their sleep surrounded by dozens of grandchildren rich beyond belief.)

I'm curious as to where you saw Kirk say that. Because everything that I have ever read or seen has said almost the total opposite.

Death Magnetic is a fantastic album. I'll even go as far as to say that St. Anger is a good album too. If any other band put St. Anger out, they would have been hailed as heroes.

Today is the 30th anniversary of the release of Kill 'Em All.

When you're young and new, you have lots of new ideas, and you have to keep putting stuff out to keep in the public eye. Once you're a known entity, you don't have to keep releasing material for people to remember you. The bigger concern is maintaining your fan base. You can't venture too far from the tree you've planted anymore.

My second favorite band is AC/DC who's put out 18 albums in ~39 years. My favorite happens to be the Beatles who put out 27 studio albums in 8 years (granted, a lot of that material was re-purposed early on). I don't see Metallica recording another Black Album anytime soon but I still dig a lot of stuff from Death Magnetic and the Load and Re-Load albums are some of my favorite stuff they've done. The same is true for AC/DC. There will never be another Back In Black, but Black Ice and Stiff Upper Lip are damn solid albums and I'm glad they were made. Metallica seems to have a lot of drama and pressure working together on new material as was mentioned before. They've got plenty of things to do that they enjoy that isn't nearly as stressful so who can blame them for not cranking out the records.
