Does music run in your family?

My parents love music. My Mother played piano and my father loves to sing. They both used to encourage me to sing and enjoy music. They weren't so "hip" to rock/pop music though.

father has been a professional musician for 55 years and also taught music for a long time. retired from the virginia symphony after 31 years. now he plays in various groups, jazz / big band stuff, and has a few private students.
father started me on piano and switched me over to double bass and have been playing for 25 years or so.

I suppose it does to an extent. I play bass, my brother plays guitar, my sister is taking up keyboards, my dad plays banjo and played guitar when he was younger. I have a few cousins that play guitar and my dad's uncle was a drummer. I also have many relatives (like my mom) who don't seem to be into music at all aside from owning a handful of cds.
Yeah, none of my family has ever played music, to my knowledge, unless maybe we date back ages and such, but I'm pretty much the first musician in the family. Its cool, because my family has been supportive of my playing. My Dad helped me a lot when I was just starting out buying my first bass & practice amp for my birthday. Its cool being the first. All my children will end up musicians most likely, so long as its what they want to do.
Nope, me and my brother are the first ones (that we know of) to take up musical instruments. I was first, started playing bass when I was 13 and he took up guitar a few months after.
In his younger days, Dad used to play lead guitar in his own band. Mom has a powerful singing voice and continually amazes with her incredible harmonies. They still run the samoan choir at their local church, which my younger brother still plays in.
Of all the kids, my middle sister is the only one who cannot hold a tune nor play an instrument, God bless her. My younger sister and I play keyboard & guitar, though most of the talent lies with my baby brothers: between them, they play keyboard, guitar, bass & drums. And they're not above creating their own songs.
So yeah, music runs in the family.

Yes. Mostly from my fathers side. Artists and musicians.
My father has been a musician(trumpet) since the 50's and in the sixties had a couple of top 10's on the Canadian charts with his band. Since '69 he's owned/managed and been the head engineer of a successful recording studio here in town. He played in an R&B group up until he was 68 years old

My aunt (fathers sis) played piano and fronted a bunch of cover bands in the Seattle area for about 25 years. She teaches piano now to about 20 students.
My second cousin was a world class saprano with the London Opera in England. Her name is Lois McDonall. She was best known for the opera Maria Padilla sp? I don't know much about opera but she is well known in the field. She taught vocals at the U of Toronto for years until retiring.
My grandfather played 4 or 5 instruments (not pro). I have his old Gibson trapdoor banjo, circa 1923 and an old Buesher sax from the 30's.
My great uncle was a double bass player and tried his hand at editorial cartooning. I didn't find this out until 10 years ago. I of course play bass(30years and counting) and was an editorial cartoonist up until a couple of years ago.
I have played a number of instruments over the years.Piano,guitar,violin,clarinet and trumpet. I just found a natural afinity for bass.
Besides editorial cartoons I'm a serious illustrator and graphic artist. I've been on hiatus for a couple of years however. Here is a link to a portfolio with some of my work if interested

We always had lots of music going on in the house. my parents were young hepsters, so there was a lot of Woody, Ellington and Kenton and Miles, Kai & JJ and MJQ goin' on.
Then the Beatles came on scene and then there was lots of Who, Kinks, Joplin, Country Joe, Doors, Byrds, etc etc
also my uncle was into folk so I grew up on Kingston Trio (RIP Nick), Woody, Pete Seegar, Dylan -- later Baez and Arlo

My grandma on my dad's side played violin, piano, and organ. She's 94 years old, sharp as a tack, and she still messes around with a little electronic keyboard that my cousins got for her. My dad was and is a country and bluegrass musician who plays guitar, banjo, and mandolin. He still gets out and picks with his friends every so often. My younger brother is actually a pretty talented fingerstyle guitar player, he became a psychiatrist, yet thankfully he still has a decent acoustic guitar to bang around on when he gets the chance. As for me I'm the oddball who fell in love with playing bass, and I'm glad I did.

It seemed kind of inevitable that music would be part of my life. Now that my wife (she's a pretty good singer) and I are talking about kids, I wonder if they will be musically inclined. I don't want to force them into music, but I plan to put them in lessons when they are young, and I do hope they will take to it.

Many artists and musicians in my extended family. My brothers and I were encouraged to play music from an early age. My mom campaigned vigorously to save the school music programs from budget cuts.
My parents simply assumed that "music" refers to classical music, so they were a bit surprised by my interest in playing bass, but I know they realize that music is music.
Recently, both of my kids started Suzuki strings at ages 6 and 8. Needless to say, their grandparents are delighted.

My great-grandpa's were professional jazz pianist's.( I think there was 2 or 3 professional jazz musicians in my family.)
My grandpa played trumpet. Dad played a guitar. My brother plays guitar. Other brother plays trombone. Then there's me with my bass. First person in my family history to pick up bass. Hopefully I carry on the music talent in my family.

I've been playing piano since I was 3 and and was playing cartoon theme songs by ear by age 5 and even played Chariots Of Fire at age 5. My wife is also a gifted musician with many years of piano under her belt. I'm just hoping our kids have the same gifts.

Not from a performance stand point, not at all, but it was my dad's extreme love of music that got me into music in general, so... yeah.
My mom was a big band singer/comediane in the forties. She did some gigs with Gene Krupa and sang for a while in the Harmionicats. In the fifties she was up for the lead in the misical,"Pajama Game". She found out she was pregnan t with a certain future left handed bass player and had to quit the gig. She use to take me and my brother to road trips over the summer.

Yep. Skipped a generation rather strangely but my Grandfather on my mums side could play electric and upright bass and my Grandfather on my dads side was an old school 50's crooner in the style of Deano and ol Blue Eyes.... Never heard him sing until his 50th anniversary and DAMN was I blown away! He hadnt sung in over 20 years professionally but he's still got it!
music definately runs in my family. my dad has a masters in music and made me and and all 5 of my siblings play instuments. at first we all played violin (one of my sisters has a masters in violin), but my brother and i didnt like it so much. so i ended up playing bass and drums and my brother plays piano and guitar.
My grandmother used to go around playing guitar and singing at radio stations (that's how she met my grandfather who was a boxing commentator for a radio station, paid for college in mexico)..
My oldest brother is on the road with major touring acts as a FoH Engineer..
My middle brother has credits with majors as well as major jingle work.. now he's a director of communications with a "mega church"
