Does this bass preamp exist?

May not be exactly what you described but the Whirlwind Bass Ten is the best thing to happen to my tone. I also use it as a hpf since it has a frequency control of 20hz. So I just cut that slider entirely. I don’t really need a LPF because I don’t have an issue with too much treble or noise. It replaced both my Rusty Box and Darkglass AO years ago. Unfortunately it doesn’t have a DI so I have a separate DI for that but if they ever put one in there it would be a game changer for a lot of preamp users I’d imagine.

I really like my Aguilar Tonehammer DI as a pedal DI, but I wish it had 2 semi-parametric mid controls, the bass frequency is way too low in my opinion (40hz to me is just too boomy/undefinied - 80-100 sounds better to me for thump) - and I'd also like it to have a variable HP and LP filter.

Does this pedal preamp pedal exist apart from Darkglass suggestions?

4 band active Eq
- bass freq centre 80-100hz
- 2 semi-parametric mid controls
- Treble control somewhere between 4-5 Khz

Mild amp type overdrive, switchable on or off (this isn't absolutely necessary, but I'll include anyhow)

Variable HP and LP filters

Or could someone like Josh broughton build something similar? I realise the best way is to ask him, but I don't like to ask unless I am a little more sure sucha thing is possible - plus I would need to get some funds together so at this point just fact finding.

Appreciate any suggestions apart from Darkglass. Darkglass stuff really is great - the drive flavour just isn't for me.
I have an Eden TN-226 (225-watts rms) that I use for small venues, and Eden actually makes a "Eden Module" that is a TN preamp module lifted right from the preamp of my amp. It has Bass, two semi-parametric controls for mids, and a treble EQ along with their Enhance knob (boosts bass, cuts low mids, boosts treble). It also has a bass boost that only boosts the bass without cutting the mids or boosting the treble.

It also comes with a nice auto-compressor. I don't care for the auto-compressor on my Eden WT500/800 amp, which is the same one for most of the Eden amps. IMHO it's good for slap but that's about it. But this auto-compressor works nicely. I was playing our small venue location with our 5-pc. group and we were getting pretty loud. I noticed that my power clipping light was flashing on and off...a lot. Very much of that and it shuts down. I'd already dropped the bass EQ to slightly less than flat and raised the gain a bit while dropping the master slightly but was still getting that flash. So as a last resort, I engaged the auto-compressor that I normally have bypassed. That did the trick! It worked really well and unlike the one in my big Eden amp it wasn't obvious it was engaging. But it calmed all those peaks while still giving me plenty of dynamics and that clip light went out. So that's a very useful feature.

Personally on my TN amp, I run it flat and use either the 1st or second semi-parametric to select ~250Hz and boost it up to 1 o'clock or a bit more. If your sound honks at you, back it down slowly until it goes away. These semi-parametrics are really versatile. The first one goes from 30Hz up to 300Hz and the second one lets you select anywhere from 200Hz up to 2KHz. If you are too rumbly, you can select down around 30Hz and cut it by 15db. That's not really a band pass filter because semi-parametrics are more of a pyramid shape effect but it definitely clears up any mud. I'm not sure what the bass boost signal boosts at but I have used it a number of times and I am particularly critical of a muddy bass. It actually works really well with the single 112 I use, even thought that 112 still sounds good without it. Nice thing is if you want to boost the bass without boosting the treble or scooping out the mids, that bass boost button does it. The Enhance will boost the bass but scoops the mids and boosts the treble too.

If you're interested below is Eden's video going through the features. Only place I could find it right now was Gear4Music.com and you need to select their US web site for US pricing. They currently sell it for $167.50. Seems to me I'd seen it at $179 elsewhere.

I have the Eden Terra Nova preamp module mentioned above. I was going to suggest it as well. The controls are very sensitive and offer tons of tone shaping opportunity. It plays really well with my P bass with rounds as well as my Jazz with flats. The footswitchable effects loop is perfect for adding dirt in. I love mine. I actually think I found it for like $100 new from Thomann when I bought my Harley Benton JB-75. Since I was already paying shipping on the bass, it was a steal.

Yeah. It's called a Q-Strip. Get one, use it for absolutely everything, and love the hell out of it.

They’re not exactly easy to find for sale.

Ah yes - true. And the fact I'm in Australia makes them very rare indeed. I see Josh looks like he is going to produce a few again but I think at this stage the Q-Strip is gonna do it for me. No variable HP/LP but the LP isn't really that important, its most the HPF I want to cut rumble and being set at 45hz its in the spot I would want it already.

You won't regret it. It's a great, versatile tool.

Just as an fyi, the broughton hpf LPF it's pretty much always available. I used one for years with my tone Hammer before I got a studio one and before I got the messenger. Makes the tone Hammer function very much like those two pedals and mitigates the low center point of the bass control on the tone hammer

I’ve been really tempted by the Q-Strip. I’ve never liked SansAmp pedals, but this is a little different, and does so much. Yeah you can’t set the frequency for the LPF and HPF but the factory frequency choice seems good. 4 band eq, good ins and outs. If you don’t want/need a tube pre/DI at his is good. I have thought about running this before my REDDI for a little more eq control.

I use the Q-strip in front of the ToneHammer DI. Love it. Best EQ option I've found. I can pull out the mud with the low mid sweep, and still boost a bit of bottom end with the lows. Boosting the Hi mids gives me a little grit too. Just an amazing pedal. I keep the tone shaping pretty minimal on the Tonehammer, though it does give me one more mid sweep if needed. AGS is always on with low gain too.
