already explained to OP but apparently he can't dial in the VT to get a tone for the board that he likes, go figure but it is what it is.

Reading this thread with interest. I've got an Orange TB500 that I love but want a cab sim DI to go to FOH. The JDI looks like it's made for a tube amp--or can I just plug it into the effects send, use the cab sim button and go to FOH? I don't want a pedal, since I want it to come after my head's pre and EQ.

Interesting info in regards to the VT DI. It's got me interested at least in trying it again for the reasons mentioned, although the biggest issue I had with that pedal is the baked in tone that I can't seem to EQ away.
Lastly....I've never thought of doing this but can you actually run a DI from the effects loop so the board gets your amp EQ? Even so wouldn't that be the same as running your amps DI to the board?

AS far as I know, preamp out and XLR out on a lot of amps is the same, though sometimes the XLR is after the FX loop.
sure, works just fine. FX send, preamp out, whatever, into a regular ol' DI will get your amp's "post" preamp tone into the PA.
would do that all the time when mixing bands where the bass amp's XLR out was misbehaving but we still wanted the amp's tone in the equation.
(fx sends on amps don't interrupt the sound, so you can just do that without worrying about the return or anything.)

i've been trying to justify getting one of these for a while now, tough because my regular BDDI has served me so well; this little detail might just have done the trick!
insane, because that's a pretty awesome feature. hell, the button should say '1/4" speaker sim defeat' right on the pedal!
For real, I even double-checked with support to make sure I wasn't misunderstanding anything.
The VT bass DI's "baked in" tone can be minimized with the blend feature. One can mix in the blended signal as little as one wants and still get the can sim effect to the FOH via the XLR out.
I haven't played a gig with this yet, but I like this pedal a lot better with the blend dialed back between 11 and 1 when going into a board for recording purposes...kinda silly that all the sample settings in the manual are with the blend dimed.
...whereas my sansamp sound is absolutely with the blend dimed, that's where all the fat, juicy goodness is; i'm all about "amp tone" as opposed to the raw direct bass sound. (i keep the drive low for a clean amp tone, but an amp tone nonetheless.)
I did some testing after work with my VTDI, and on mine the speaker sim does not automatically engage when the XLR cable is plugged in, there is a difference with the speaker sim button pushed when I listen from the board. I got this pedal used, so it could be that they've changed that in the new builds -- it could also be that Tech 21 didn't understand my question, who knows. I'll definitely follow up on this and let you know what I come up with.

the confusion may be from the idea of the sim "engaging" or not when you plug in the XLR, like there's some kind of internal switching going on.
the question is just whether the sim stays always on the XLR out or not, it wouldn't matter if a mic cable was plugged into it.
if not, ask 'em if there's a mod to allow for that!
Heard back from Tech 21, here's what their support guy said:
"It's been explained to me that due to the way the tube emulation (Drive and Character) portions of the circuit run parallel to, and are ultimately combined with the "non-SansAmp" (EQ and Level) portions by way of the Blend knob, we can't split up the speaker emulation on the outputs like we can on the Bass Driver Deluxe and VT Bass Deluxe (neither of which have the Blend control). If it's any consolation, this seems to be more important to guitar players using the Blonde Deluxe and Liverpool Deluxe, because their speaker choices seem to be the result of years of trial and error until they found what they like best. But bass speaker cabs, for the most part, are small full-range systems, and the speaker emulation doesn't "interfere" much with the tone (we usually say it can "enhance" the tone of your cab, but that's a matter of opinion)."
I also asked about a mod, but they said it's impossible because of the way the blend pot ties everything together. Bummer.
