Does this exist- pickup question

I've got a build that I'm planning some fiber optic work. I've done fretboards already but this time I wanna run fiber optics to light the pickup cavity.

Here's my question. Does a bass pickup exist that has pole pieces are hollow?

I would like to run fibers through each pole, from the bottom of the pickup.

Anyone? Basically a hole the whole way through each pole piece.

i suppose you could find something with screw polepieces that you could unscrew out entirely, but you'd take a big hit in the sound of the pickup.

a better idea might be lights behind the pickups, framing them somehow.

No, but I believe if you got something like a Q-Tuner pup, you could aim LED's towards the clear encasing and light that instead.

There are plenty of pickups out there with pole pieces that screw in. If you left the screws out, then you would have holes through which to place your lights. Of course, then you wouldn't have pole pieces, but there are ways around that issue. Take a humbucker and keep pole pieces in one coil, and put lights in the other. Then play it in single coil mode.

Lace alumatone or whatever they are called would be easy to drill for leds or fibreoptics.

I think this may be the final answer. The Delano's are cool, but I expect that would be crazy expensive. Way over budget.

How big a hole do you need for the optic cable? Could you use a DiMarzio Model P or J and drill into the center of the removable poles?

That was my thought too, great minds think alike! You would have to also drill through the potting compound in the pickup itself, I don't think that's a big deal.

The bottom magnets on mine were hot-glued on, and started peeling after one install; so no, I don't see a problem either.

Your other option, of course, is to snag a dirt cheap pickup off eBay and drill it. Just to try it. Hell, the thing doesn't even have to be functioning.

.50mm is the size of the optic. My biggest concern would be the drill bit breaking.

Drilling a hole that small, that deep into a hard metal would be just about impossible without breaking the drill bit, at least for me it would be.

I'm really intrigued by that Delano pick. It looks like LEDs under the pickup cover, but that kinda what I'm aiming for. Gonna have to start drawing and see where it goes.
