Oh, yes, I am the owner of this bass, and yes, i know my stuff. I have a collection that includes all the sought after fender basses, and upgraded my previous '52, to acquire this one, which is, absolutely stunning.
No pic, no bass.

Someone i know pointed me in the direction of this thread, very interesting reading, lots of sensible comments from people who clearly know their vintage stuff, and some comments from people who clearly know very little, but somehow feel qualified to diss a perfectly fine instrument.

Of course i checked out every single component, and can vouch for the fact that it is 100% original, except the case, which is obviously a '55-'57. I already had an original '52 gigbag with my old one though, so i kept that.
By the way, no claim was made by the vendor (It was on consignment to the ebay seller, which is actually a very well respected, if not the most respected, vintage shop in the UK), that it was played or owned by ZZ Top. They just so happened to be in the shop, and they took a picture, it has the same marking by the bridge which is evident in the large pics i have.
Thanks.

Something is wrong.
Check the tuners and their age. That's a chrome age reaction to oxygen. Then check other exposed chrome parts (they don't match). The decal appears newly applied; decal age wear is fairly obvious to discern.
There's more but I don't believe that is a total original. There are just too many low age indicators. IF the guitar were kept in an oxygen sealed environment then none of the metal parts would oxidize, etc. Obviously there has been NO use on the guitar (see body edge condition); that is confusing as there would be spider webbing in the areas coated with nitro (back of neck, body coat, etc). There are simply too many people who can build up a forgery. I believe that the shop may have got taken - it doesn't seem they question it's authenticity. I do however because wood, chrome, and nitro finished that are nearly 60 yrs old simply don't look like that UNLESS they are not exposed to oxygen or light. It simply seems hard to believe that someone put this guitar in a sealed area for 60yrs. And why would the tuners age and the others parts remain? 60 years back someone told themselves "this will be worth a lot of money I need to seal in (somehow)"????? Sealing methods were not that common. IF it had remained in the case for 60yrs the lining of the case would have embedded itself to the finish in many areas....there are just too many questions.
I agree with all this except one point: I don't believe it would have to have been sealed all those years. It could have been even 20 years old when and if it actually got sealed. That said, it doesn't matter. I don't trust this one either. The Billy pic does it for me.
Besides that
I don't think Leo drilled out the bodys to run the strings through in 1952, the ad sounds a lot like BullS--T to me!
So even if all else is true it's been worked on lowering the price a lot!
this
So, you're saying Leo's slab Precisions from 1951 to 1954, and in fact the contour models from 1954 to 1957, didn't have string-thru bodies???
Dear oh dear oh dear.
This is a Bass forum? Right??
But this guy who knows my uncle washed Leo's car once and he said it was true!!!
well, not really my uncle. Actually 2nd cousin on my mom's side. And he didn't wash Leo's car, but he did see him drive by once.
Anywho, clearly an authoritative source!![]()

Well, he certainly sounds more authoritative than most on here!!!

Not really comparable, although these are very nice basses, but in case you missed the earlier thread, the '52 did sell, although technically not for $30k
This zombie thread is hilarious. Lots of people chiming in that clearly have no idea about vintage Fenders. Awesome.

"Technically"?
What did you get for it?
