It has occurred to me, if you want a cheap bass to fool around with, SX might be the way to go. Of course, they don't appear to have a mustang\bronco body shape

As always, looking used will never hurt. You may be able to find what you're looking for for real cheap if you're lucky.

I don't mean to be rude either, but that seems a bit narrow-minded.

The points you make sound like assumptions (maybe they're not. perhaps you've looked into Broncos with more detail than I have, or maybe you put them together or something). Now, even if your points are true, I just don't see why it matters. I find that people are quick to call something a bad idea because it's not something they would do.

If a bass might get turned into firewood, why not a cheap bass? A Bronco's $150 new. That's not a lot of money (comparatively speaking) to risk on a bass experiment if things go wrong.

I don't think that a Darkstar would sound bad in that (or any bass). It is possible that he could have a really cool looking, really unique sounding bass. If it doesn't work out, he still has a Darkstar, to use elsewhere.

The whole idea is so rock and roll, I can't believe that anyone would try to talk Andy out of it.

EDIT: After reading this, I realized that I sound like I don't believe that Bronco's aren't a budget bass. Oops. I know that is true. Remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

I'd call it a bad idea not because of the fact that it is something I wouldnt do, but because of the fact that the odds that it'll sound and feel great, granting the OP a unique bass are, at best, slim. he'll most likely have problems like unleveled frets/unhelpful trussrod...and for a begginer DIY that'll render the bass pretty much unplayable and take away the joy from building it...and isnt that the last thing you'd want from a personal project?

Keep in mind that all three models have narrower string spacing than I've seen spec'd for DarkStars... I don't get too hung up on polepieces lining up directly under the strings, (we're talking about a magnetic 'field'), but some would say I'm FOS...

Also, FWIW, last time that I looked, (a month ago, at least), there was a Bronco in a local music store that was a very nice little axe... easily worth the $129 tag!

I agree that putting a 300$ pickup in a 100$ bass is silly. The DS is a quality, precision device meant to bring out the best in an instrument. With that Squier Bronco, the best is really not that good at all. It's barely the minimum amount of parts required to qualify as a bass guitar, they even skimped on materials by making the neck shorter! (j/k)

You'd have an awesome sounding pickup in a pile of ... well, an inferior bass. If you can float the cash for a Darkstar, you can surely afford something better to put it in, at least that's how I see it. If you are in love with the Squier Bronco bass and already have one then I suppose the DS would be a great investment. I would never recommend buying a Squier Bronco new though.
