@OP

erm...you werent really thinking about buying a bronco and installing a Darkstar, now were you? you were thinking more along the lines of building it from scratch, right?

you see, broncos arent that well made...so I'd steer clear from big investments on such a bass..

No, i was thinking about getting a bronco and throwing a darkstar in there. If the bass falls apart, i can always take out the pup and put it elsewhere right? :D

dont do it man...the pickup may sound great...but the bass will still be (and feel) cheap, so it will be a marginal upgrade..

if you're looking to pick one up and use it as a project, by all means go ahead! but you can enjoy yourself AND keep costs low ;)

What if after Andy does it, he ends up liking the sound and the feel? Does that still make it a bad idea? Like he says, he can always use the pup elsewhere if he wants.

Frankly Andy, while I wouldn't pursue such an endeavour, I say go for it. I don't see the harm, you'll definitely have a unique bass.

I dont mean to be rude, but that seems a bit naive...I'll explain

- a bronco is a budget bass...as low-end as it gets. it's got crap tuners, a body made of (not properly dried) agathis, and a cheap neck.
- it's probably badly routed.
- quality control sucks...so you might end up with realizing you just bought a piece of firewood from the moment you touch it.

also, it will be the OPs first project. there's a chance it might not go so well (hope I'm wrong!! :))...so what happens when you mix a very cheap bass with a couple of accidents? you get firewood!

I don't mean to be rude either, but that seems a bit narrow-minded.

The points you make sound like assumptions (maybe they're not. perhaps you've looked into Broncos with more detail than I have, or maybe you put them together or something). Now, even if your points are true, I just don't see why it matters. I find that people are quick to call something a bad idea because it's not something they would do.

If a bass might get turned into firewood, why not a cheap bass? A Bronco's $150 new. That's not a lot of money (comparatively speaking) to risk on a bass experiment if things go wrong.

I don't think that a Darkstar would sound bad in that (or any bass). It is possible that he could have a really cool looking, really unique sounding bass. If it doesn't work out, he still has a Darkstar, to use elsewhere.

The whole idea is so rock and roll, I can't believe that anyone would try to talk Andy out of it.:cool:

EDIT: After reading this, I realized that I sound like I don't believe that Bronco's aren't a budget bass. Oops. I know that is true. Remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. ;)
