Double Bass Does thrashing around while you play do any good?

Dear cold elephant,

"... I should not be have to deal with abuse from other members of the community..."

So now You are a victim of this blog?

You know what i think, maybe Guy Tuneh could speak with you and stop the tie that you may find yourself every time you seeing his way of playing, try to come down, please for your own health, take it easy, its more than just overreacting, let go...

Please everything is fine and good!

Yawn.

Regardless of ones' pedigree there are far better ways to spend ones' energy than hating on Mr. Tuneh. Posting videos of yourself playing, trimming your cat's nails, getting a root canal...

Everyone has the right to critique anyone they wish, but what is posted here is largely vitriolic and completely unfounded and the tone is largely unprofessional.

Fwiw there are many many many players out there with degrees from nice schools who play with nice orchestras who don't play as well as Guy. I imagine there are several involved in this discussion. There are far more who are remaining silent and respectful.

This thread needs to die. For good. NOTHING has been gained and there is no benefit to the community in this. At all.

I can't help but feel that my point has been missed.

I was trying to say that anyone should have the right to an opinion. Quite how this has been misunderstood, I'm not sure. I see I am wasting my time here, but for more reasons than I originally thought.

At this point, since Mr. Tuneh isn't posting here under his own name, there are no rules against posting critiques of performances on youtube videos. People are entitled to voice their opinions, regardless of how emphatically others may find them useless. If Mr. Tuneh were to decide to post under his own name, then things would be different because some of the comments would not be appropriate to be directed at another member. But since this is not the case...

As the original poster I can only apologise for starting this mayhem. I would kindly ask Chris to close once and for all this disgrace! If I knew it would overwhelm the other fantastic work done on this forum I would never have posted!
As far as I'm concerned I don't care what Guy does and The reason I haven't posted for a month is that everytime I log in this is at the top of the unread threads.

If it doesn't stop you'll lose at least one member (me).

Now I've got to go and get back into shape for Puccini's 'Manon Lescaut'!

oh, cold elephant,
Your point has been missed, has been misunderstood, everyone do un-justices to you but and first of all Mr. Tuneh, still you are amazing, with great studying, moving at the right level of performers world wide.
Yep right, i think that first of all Mr. Tuneh has to be afraid from you and from competition with You, after all, you can say what ever you wish - even if its O.k to insult other working bassist, in this case one of the finest out there, only because you got some study diploma.
great, so in that case, would you like to know where Guy Tuneh got his Diplomas? there is life after school also...

However take care, everything is fine and just good, stay calm and just do good on bass
as you wish, and i hope i would have the chance to hear about your work in the future to come, i wish you to go much far than Mr. Tuneh got, so you can say: You see i did it better than him.

All the best.

Oh dear.

Did I claim to be after Guy Tuneh's career? No. Did I say that Guy Tuneh spends a lot of time doing solo bass playing which I personally do not do? Yes. Did I claim that my education and career gives me right to criticize anyone? No. Did I state that actually my career is irrelevant and actually I think everyone should be entitled to an opinion? Yes.

Not much more I can say here.

Exactly- there's nothing left to say here.

So shut it down.

Chris- those may be the technical rules of the forum, but to leave it open based on these semantics is questionable. The tone here is disgraceful, and I have never before encountered so much public bashing of a professional, respected player of our instrument.

Just imagine the backlash if we had a similar discussion Re: Gray Karr's theatrics, or Eugene Levinson's "Per Questa..."

It is a given that not everyone will like everything, and that every dog has his day. For the sake of the critics here, I pray you never have one of your own performances torn to shreds in this manner. This is the current climate of the internet- everyone is a judge. I had hoped this forum would not become a festering cesspool like Yelp and the Youtube comments pages.

Shame. Our instrument deserves better.

Even Furgie wants it down.

In deference to you, I will close the thread. I have to say I find it ironic that several members who often voice their opinions in the strongest possible terms appear to be upset that others are doing the same, and also add that there is more going on in this thread than meets the eye of the general membership. However, since you started the thread and are requesting it closed, I think that's worth honoring.

The question of movement while playing is a valid one. Perhaps it could be taken up again at some point without such a polarizing effect as happened here with this particular set of circumstances. In closing, may I just add that this is the internet, and there are going to be opinions flying about all over the place. We won't agree with all or even perhaps many of them, but it's the nature of the medium.
