One of my cats has had this problem before. Taking your cat to the vet is a good idea. It might be something as simple as changing the diet (which I did with one of my cats who's now on an expensive "prescription" diet), also giving the cat laxatone or a little bit (~1/4 tsp) of metamucil to help things um, pass. Also, if your cat isn't brushed often, it can ingest fur which can cause a blockup.
So, it might not be a big deal, but a trip to the vet is in order to make sure it isn't.
