Does your #1 in your collection suddenly get pushed back in preference?

My two number 1's. Although I tend to favor the one on the left a little more for it's tonal options and playability. I do like the light weight of the one on the right. Both Ibanez.

Like others have already said ... my basses do different things. Different tools for different tones.
If I need a Jazz .... I got it
If I need a P flavor .... I got it
If I need a fretless .... I got it

I like them all for what they do and how they fit the gig at hand. As a Jazz Bass player by long term experience, I generally favor my Lull M4V, but I'm perfectly happy to use the MIJ '51P RI or the Roscoe Beck IV or either fretlesses I own (Turner Ren IV or Roscoe Beck IV fretless).

I own 4 basses at the moment and 3 of them are "in rotation", but it really comes down to two: the Sadowsky NYC 5 fretted and the Fbass AC6 fretless. I honestly pick the bass depending on the gig and set list. Sometimes fretless is the way to go and sometimes it is fretted (mostly fretted these days). Every time I play my fretless I am reminded how much I like it (tone and playability), but someone in the band (usually the drummer) will say, "that one part would have sounded better with frets"...conversely, when I play my fretted bass the drummer will no doubt comment that he misses the tone of my fretless, which he describes as "pure" (Fbass has a great organic sort of tone).

My 4001 was my number one (and for quite a while, my only one) from the early '70s until I bought my current number one (an Alembic Elan 6) new in 1992. To this day that Alembic goes on every gig no matter where. I still have the 4001, but it's been many years since it's been out.

Not for me. I have 6 basses now, and nothing will dethrone my #1 in my eyes. It is the only thing I would run into a burning house to get it...especially if the cat is giving me crap that day. I would play it at every gig for the rest of my life and be amazingly happy...but that's no fun. I don't play it at gigs very much only because it has been playing gigs with me for 26 years. Gigs don't pay my rent so I have fun with he gear I take. If I were a pro like the dudes I play with, I would have 2-3 basses and that #1 would be going to every gig with me...unless someone otherwise asked for a P or Music Man sound.

My wife would not accept me having a girlfriend and I wouldn't be interested anyway. So my ladies are my basses. I take them all out at different times depending on who I wanna hang with. They are all sweet and don't get jealous. Enjoy them all.

So today, with the new EBCF strings I grabbed the the Yamaha and went for a 2 hr gig at a farmers market. I have to say, even after it being my #1 for 2-3 years, I missed my BTB, which was for the same period my #3 of the fivers. in practice I'm also now preferring the Fender over the Yamaha, though the 9.5" radius feels way different on my right hand, but still it's pushed the Yamaha back in the pack in my mind. I'm debating whether to take the Ibanez or take the Fender just to see how I still feel about it?

Does anyone else go through phases like this?

And until tonight I thought my Ibantez was going to be a relatively unchallenged new #1. But I felt that my Fender Jazz 5 was feeling ignored to I took it for a Friday night spin. I don't know what I was thinking, but other than being a bit heavy it played and sounded amazing tonight, even plugged into a Ten2 amp that was designed for upright bass.

For some reason, in the practice room I found the 9.5" radius to feel a little clumsier especially in the right hand, but I didn't really feel any clumsiness, though there were a few moments where the narrower string spacing by the nut (compared to the Ibanez) drew my focus a few times. I was worried that the low end would sound woofy but it ended up having the right balance. I didn't change any of the EQ knobs from when I left home, but I'm definitely going to have to take note of the positions (it's got an Audere 4 band Pro Z preamp).
