I was practicing at my friend’s house this past week, and his dog was VERY interested in my gut strings—he sniffed and licked them, before he was shooed away. I’ll keep an eye on him…

My cat has shown no interest, in either strings or bows.

A luthier I knew, the widow of an old-school bass player gave him a whole box of NOS Red-O-Rays!!! He went home for the weekend. This being NYC the MICE got into the box and COMPLETELY trashed/gavoned all of them. When homes came in to work Monday,little schnibbles of chewed up Tynex and mouse poop everywhere.

I recently came home and discovered that my dog had found my new, very expensive set of Evah Pirazzi "Slap" (gold label) upright bass strings, opened the package containing the D string, and ate nearly the entire string. On this string set, the G and D strings are made of gut. Apparently the dog interpreted a gut string as a very long chew treat. I took her to an emergency vet who induced vomiting (for the dog, not me). The dog seems to have suffered no lasting ill effects from this snack. The string itself will not recover. I will leave it to readers to draw their own lesson or moral from this story.

Many years ago, our dog ate a cake of my bass rosin. There was no necessity for the vet, or for anyone else, to induce vomiting. The rug was never the same.
