Dogal Hellborg Flats JH172

I’m not really inclined to take a drill to my bass, (yet!)
Given my bass is 33” scale string through is really the preferred option.
I wrote Dogal and heard back from them, this is an issue they are aware of. Hopefully we can work it out.

I see your problem, those strings won't pass the ferrules. Dogal should really adresse this problem!

I’m not sure the issue can be addressed due to the way the strings are made. I realize that the number of people having the problem I had must be vanishingly small but, it would be prudent for the manufacturer to make a note of this on their website, especially seeing they knew about it before me.

It might be worth taking a rat tail file to the ferrules. It would take all of 5 minutes to enlarge the hole enough. Then order A few replacement ferrules in case you want to swap them out one day.

That’s an easy modification to make, but a hard one to swallow on a 180$ set of strings! But, I have had to do it in the past, usually on a hollow body with a separate tail piece. I’ve never had a problem with strings I’ve done that to.
I’m working O/T so I can get the 5 string set for my Rick 4003S/5. I really hope they work as well as on my 2016 4003. Love these strings so much

Bad news. The Dogal JH-172 Flats will not fit a Rick 4003S/5 the B string is too fat to fit the Machine Head. These Dogals do not have any Taper at all at the machine head end. I could probably force the E string to work but it would be a tight fit.

Proof that Dogal JH-172s will fit some 4003's. The E string just barely fit but good enough.

The will also fit Fender 2019 A/O 50's bass and an Ernie Ball Retro 70's Stingray. They are really great on a Pbass.

They will not fit a Rick 4003S/5 or Spector NS-2.

I installed a 5 string set of these on my Musicman Big Al SSS. The most expensive strings I've bought for electric bass. They are quite soft, l think the core is stranded.
Sounded very good unamplified, which is unusual for flats. Sounded even better amplified. Gave them a go with a blues trio tonight, and man do they sit well in a mix!
Going to play them with a Steely Dan type band tomorrow night.
They feel so good under my fingers, so I guess they were worth the price.
Anyone else have any experience with these?View attachment 5420565
Hello - Did you feel there was enough length to the "D" string with the 34" set and your headstock configuration? I was was looking at this pic of a Fender 5 and it looks like it could use a little more string?
