Yeah, you can't take anyone who says (insert technique or style or equipment choice) is wrong. They're idiots!
If an experienced and skilled player wants to tell you haw to do what you're doing in a better way - and does so respectfully - that's cool. All the others have nothing better to do than rag on others.
Oh wait, you meant you play BASS with a pick? You suck - that is ALWAYS wrong, *** don't you know anything!!?!

Hello folks,
It's not about me personally but after I a looot of Youtube comments on videos people uploaded showing their gear and what they do with it, I noticed one thing. There are a large number of people out there with a fascinating inability to accept someone doing stuff differently to how they heard it is supposed to be done so they can hide behind it and they cannot seem to shut the F up.

I'm especially talking about comments like...

"use a Jazz bass dumba$$. the reference"

or

"you don't play bass with a pick you r€tard"

or

"your slap sounds sloppy and sh!t"

I mean really, the list goes on and on and I wonder if you guys remember who said that you cannot play your instrument the way you want to as long as you're happy with it? It's really getting on me boobies to hear everyone going off about me for instance playing with a pick and I love doing it because I think it sounds better than using my fingers although I also prefer fingerstyle for slow mellow parts. But frankly, I would use my eyeball if it gave me the sound I want! However, I hoped we can all shout out to these people that limiting yourself isn't gonna get you very far and that limiting others makes you nothing but a pityful a-hole.

I pay no attention for the most part to internet trolls .... I used to.. but ovre the years I have found that people who do things like that really don't matter in the over all scheme.. so I look at them like that pile in the middle of the sidewalk . Yeah it looks bad and yeah it stinks.. so just don't step in it.. you can't clean it up unless it's your dog.

I don't see how any style can be classified as "wrong" as long as it sounds good!
I will say this, I saw a Fall Out Boy gig a few years back and the bassists style was very strange. He played with a pick but with massive amounts of right arm movement that basically looked like he was a strumming a guitar. It didn't sound sloppy but it LOOKED wrong... But **** me if the bass line to Dance Dance isn't super catchy!

Don't worry about it too much, even if the comments are directed at you. Maybe ESPECIALLY if the comments are directed at you. There are just some people that like to cause pain, and the internet gives then a safe place to do this. They want you to feel butthurt. So don't give them the satisfaction. I actually find the youtube comments very entertaining. Especially when someone would go and criticise a recognised master, you then get armies of youtubers fighting him off and insulting him... it's sad and funny at the same time. I've even seen that for some classical music stuff. People insulting each other over which master does the best interpretation of a piece. very funny. Anyway, did I mention I don't like Jaco Pastorius?

If internet comments are irritating wait until you hear it in person from a family member.

This so true lol. The best one: "you should be doing it for fun" (from a family member who was a senior employee at a multinational oil company, "offering" us a 2-week tour in Nigeria, touring Oil-employee compounds where they expected us to play dixieland to entertain them, not even wanting to consider reimbursing us for our loss of income (hiring replacements for our teaching practices, for example) if we would have take the 'offer' )

If you're getting scads of comments about how terrible you're playing is, there's always the possibility that you are, in fact, a terrible musician with little or no redeeming musical qualities.

First of all welcome to the one and only forum that generates multiple choice answers to every question. From now on you may call yourself TalkBassist, even if you never touched a bass.
Regarding your experience with YouTube, I read a lot of misplaced comments in general. Strange but true, on my YT channel there are just a handful of troll posts in 1322 comments. I rather enjoy my channel. From time to time I have pretty good conversations about gear and technique. I wonder, what is your YT channel called?
