I think i heard Jaco say in his "Playing Modern Electric Bass" that it took him nine years to transcribe and learn Donna Lee. I'm learning the Chicken right now. Donna Lee is still unreachable for me.

But Donna Lee is really just your typical 32 bar AABA Jazz standard (with some slight twists) -

- there must be thousands of Jazz heads like this and I will be expected to play them from a lead sheet without having seen it before, on any night of the week - and I'm not even that good!

A proper Jazz pro could play it by ear without seeing any music!

It might take me 8 or 9 years to transcribe a Parker solo - but not just to play a 'version' of that tune!

That chart is missing some obvious ii/V's around the Fm.

Also the Dbm is really Gb7.

The Abdim is really Bdim; which is essentially the same, but the root should be a b.

Well I expect there are many versions - but really it doesn't matter, Jazz is all about altering chords and playing your own version - adding what you want - it's about playing in the moment !

What Jaco means is that it took him 9 years from when he started playing to when he was able to play Donna Lee.

Yeah, I've seen that. I've tried not to watch it alot because it makes me want to throw my upright out the window.
Truly incredible.

On the other hand, with all due respect, NHOP looks like he just got off his day shift at the gas station.
(No offense to anyone who works at a gas station; it's just that you would think he could come up with something better that an old white t-shirt to wear at a jazz festival. I mean, Joe Pass got his shirt from John Travolta for Christ's sakes).

Well this is what I was talking about - so for players like these, Donna Lee is just one among probably thousands of Jazz standards, they could play at the drop of a hat and make amazing music out of it!

NHOP - just looks as if he spends more time on playing music than he does on his appearance - should we want it any other way?
