Don't Delay

Hey guys,

No searches turned up a general prefererence of delay pedals.

I'm looking for a delay pedal that's at most $150.

I'm aware of all those that are out there but I'm wondering what ones you guys like, and things that you don't.

Tap tempo would be nice, but it's not necessary.

I'm shying away from analog because they can sound darker and a little muddy.

It would seem that the Boss DD-7 would be a decent choice, but you have to buy another external pedal to tap tempo.

Also alluring is the Electro-harmonix #1 Echo Digital Delay.

i use the Marshall echohead. fair enough you'll need an external tap tempo, but i made mine for about £8
six modes, great sounds, very reasonably priced.

You won't see a "general" preference because it depends on what matter most to you in terms of features.

Clarity, features/modes, ability to self-oscillate, tap tempo, max delay time, modulation, looping capability and price are all things that matter differently to different people.

Around the $110 (and excluding analog delays) mark my favorites are the Echo Park which is a lot of fun and has a ton of options and the MD-3 which is just simple, clean repeats. I haven't tried the EHX #1 Echo but you might PM MysticBoo. I'm pretty sure he had one on his board for a while. The Hardwire Delay seems very similar to the Echo Park to me, but it's in your price range and gets good reviews so you might check it out too.

You don't need an external switch to tap tempo the DD-7, I own one and use this feature all the time and I've never owned a foot switch in my life. Honestly this is a great sounding pedal that I'd easily recommend.

Look for a used stereo memory man w/ hazarai. I mentioned used because you could find one for about 150.
I had the #1 Echo and 1 sec of delay time at max wasnt enough(for me) plus the blend wasnt all that great on those. <IMO>

I think the Echo Park feels a little cheap compared to Boss and Hardwire. I haven't tried the DD-7 but I'm sure it's just fine. I like the Hardwire, it doesn't oscillate and the tap tempo doesn't have a dedicated switch but it does 8 seconds of delay, has a decent looper, analog & tape simulations, etc. and it's not huge.

This pedal seems to get little love here. I dig mine a lot! Actually I like most of the Marshall pedal series...

i bought a delta lab dd-1 digital delay yesterday. so far ive been very happy with it for doomy/psychedelic sounds, and just to add texture to slow, clean lines

Go DD7 and you wont miss. Echo #1 is good too, but nothing as close as Boss in versatility and sounding. I Just sold my Echo #1, and few days back got DD7

The SMMH has a filter knob that can roll off treble or bass. The Boost D.L.A. has that built in clean boost that seems handy, though.

Someone mentioned it already, but the EHX SMMH is great. If you want to save up a little more money, you can probably get a Deluxe Memory Man for ~$175.

Right now, I use an Ibanez DE-7. Cheap, effective, and the echo mode loves feedback loopers.

I'd like a Hazarai, though.

I'd say go for the DD-7. You don't need an external pedal to tap tempo. Just hold down the footswitch for two seconds till the light flashes and then tap away. I currently run a DD-20, but the DD-7 should do just fine for you.

that's really the only feature i'd want on the SMMH. i want all the other features on either of the ones i posted. why can't i find one with all of the above? WHY? WHY HAVE THE DELAY GODS FORSAKEN ME?!?

Yeah, the bass roll-off is pretty handy if you are going for a more articulate sound. I a few presets on mine for different songs, and one needs just a touch of ambience to fill in the sound, and I use the filter to remove just a bit of the bass so I can still play a halfway busy line without everything getting so muddy.
