I can't speak to the lack of knobs, which I do understand, but the latency is the fault of your system, not the software. I use it frequently for building scratch tracks as it's much easier than setting up and mic'ing an amp, especially when it's 1:30 in the morning and inspiration has struck and I want to put it down before falling asleep and forgetting it.

On my system, through an Apogee Duet running off of a FireWire cable into my MacBook Pro, the latency is so slight that it is inaudible. Even zooming WAY in on the waveform, you'd be hard pressed to see any deviation from the beat when played properly, i.e. in time with the click.

Ha! I remember this happening in high school and feeling like a dumb ass :). The guitar player and I wandered out into the audience at an outdoor show at a large park. By the time we got out to the back, the drummer actually stopped because we ended up so far behind the beat. The singer started laughing and said something like "guys, you gotta come back so we can finish the song" . It was kinda funny.
