Don't expect the impossible from a 15 inch driver!!

That I can believe! Poor ears for those nearby.


By good mechanical condition, I mean no rub, visible cone damage, torn surround, etc. I think it's pretty unlikely a bass VC will burn without leaving easily spotted signs of mechanical damage.

My point was not that you can't damage a bass driver VC with overpowering it, but that your much more likely to destroy the driver mechanically. I think the percent of burnt VC's in bass drivers is likely in the single digits. I'm a hack when it comes to repairing drivers and it's unlikely I would ever try to repair a pro/bass driver, much less charge money for doing so. Well, maybe if the owner had done something really bad to me in the past :D
It is certainly less frequent but it happens. I made bad smells come from a 15 cab once. Still sounded great while doing it (it was elevated, I could hear it well). I got lucky, it still works fine.

A delay with the test due to the vacation but I have just given it a good trial. Man what a difference ;) I think I may have to change the title of this thread...... not tried it with the classic 400 yet but with the others it was clean up to gig volumes and beyond also when detuned...... 2x10 kept up well but the eq needs a total re-think now as there seems to be much more volume coming from the 15. Thanks for all the advice / help.... case closed :)

Months on and the new 15 is still suprising me !! Detuned stand alone with two guitarists ! Not breaking a sweat :) I wish I had faital 10s in the accompanying 210tx now as the basslites sound super but tend to struggle when detuned. But hey one lives and learns. Anyone out there got experience with faital 10 inch neos?
 
Let's assume that one has a professional bass speaker that can handle very high RMS levels and that it is in a tuned small cabinet. Let's also assume that there is a high quality amp that puts out lots of clean power and that the instrument and amp EQ are reasonable (no super low freqs.)
Perhaps a 3015 and a TL606 cabinet with a solid 800 Watt amp.

At some point, is the SPL limited by the size of the cabinet as it can not push enough air in the this smaller box?
or
Is SPL more limited to cone area all things being equal?

SPL is limited by a variety of things, and is not a single number but one that varies with frequency.

a 3015 (HO or LF) at 800 watts will be very far into power compression and will also suffer from mechanical power limits well before 800 watts (RMS).

Yes the 800 watt amp was pulled from thin air to illustrate plenty of power handling before amplifier distortion.
Understood that cabinet volume and/or cone area are not a single variable that controls SPL.
The reason I ask is that recently played through a TL606 with a 3015 (non LF) and thought that it might be louder although I did not need the volume.
More of just a "wonder how loud it will go safely and continue to be musical"

Sounds like many love the Subway 1x15 or 2x10; I'll have to give them a try.

Maybe it will go louder until it stops making sound? There are design elements that some drivers CAN have that will mask the approaching end of linear reproduction, making it hard to hear when you are in trouble.
