Why do I get the feeling lately that a bunch of threads are started by cranky old ladies?

I personally think that an album is better than live, just sayin. Heck, some bands I haven't seen live, but wouldn't after hearing live recordings, even if I love the studio versions. For example, I would never, ever, go see Tarja live. Her songs are awesome, but then she massacered the live versions. I mean, how does someone have an absolutely heavenly voice in the studio but then become a croaking turtle on stage? Okay, maybe not that bad, but she sounds out of breath on the live albums.
I know other people may disagree, and that's fine, but I say don't just go by what you hear live to make a decision to buy or not buy a cd. Otherwise you may miss out on some great songs. Btw, if you want to hear a good example, listen to the studio version of "Lost Northern Star", then listen to the live version. Just the thought of it makes me shiver, and not in a good way...

In a studio, you can do it and do it and do it again...have 100 chances to "get it right" ( if you've got the budget ), not to mention all the production you can do post-tracking, cut-n-paste editing, lining everything up on a grid. It's nuts what you can do in a modern studio. You can even make a whole album without being able to actually play an instrument.

Live however, it's right then, right there and in a split second it's past you....no second chances. That's when you know if people are good or not.

I'd rather see people live, or listen to a crappy, un-edited live recording than a pristine studio masterpiece any day.

The thing is if a band is good on record and sucks live what do i care? I can just go back and listen to the records. It's not like you'll ever listen to a band more often live than on record (well i guess there's bootlegs....) But if they're supposedly only really good live, well then that means i can only truly enjoy that band the odd times they tour and have a show in my city? It doesnt seem like its worth bothering about such a band then.

It sucks when a band that's good on record sucks live but that's all it does, suck. I'll still like them because i don't get to hear their songs live 99% of the time anyway.

If i like a band's songs the only way they can truly suck live anyway is if the sound is horrible which is less a musician's problem than their crew or gear or the venue. I've never known a band i like to not be able to play properly live otherwise. As for improvisation and jamming...not into that much at all. IF you can do it and make your songs actually better without it becoming self indulgent twattery great, but by my standards that rarely happens.
