Doom Metal Amp

I used the 450H a while back and the thing clipped real easy, and that was only in a pub with a pretty loud drummer but 2 guitarists that don't really go very ott. We play pretty noisey post-hardcore (PROPER post-hardcore ) too but really couldn't get much depth out of it and the classic 4x10 cab he was using. The thing has probably had some abuse though given the guy who was using it was in a really loud punk band, so it might well have not been putting out as much power as it should have been.

If your on a budget good old jack of pretty much all trades Peavey might be worth looking into. If you can find a black widow loaded 2x15 or 1x15+2x8 or 1x18+2x10 and a fairly powerful old head then you'll have plenty of low end to play with, then you can spend the extra money on a decent overdrive to make up for the lack of valve pre-amp, Some of the old Peavey stuff is really geniunely good quality too especially given what you pay for it.

For doom it's all about Cheap and old. I even preffer old solid state to tube.

One of my best buds plays in an AWESOME Doom band and has a set up like this:

Ibanez SR505 tuned ADADG

Sunn Beta Bass --> Sunn 2x15 & Peavey 2x15

Sunn Coliseum Keyboard Amp --> Acoustic 4x15

I always felt that 8 15s were a little overkill. But he plays with a guitarist using 4 4x12s Sunn and Marshall.



For teh Doo000oom i use:

Ibanez SRX390 in C standard

Peavey Mark 6 --> Ampeg 2x15 & Peavey 1x15

Kustom200 --> Acoustic 6x10

That's with a guitarist using a Sunn Model T and 2 matching 4x12s



I've never felt like doom bass "needs" a tube head. With the money you save on a good Solid State you can spend the rest on Effect Pedals so you can REALLY get the doomy goodness.

I forget how loud/thick doom is supposed to be to be done correctly. I a few years ago I caught Graves at Sea (random vid of them- ) at a small/medium venue. The bassist was using 2 Ampeg 8x10s. I think one was clean, the other had tons of effects going through it. The guitarist had an Orange full stack which was the loudest amp ever (nice midrange, not too high gain).

Anything all tube will do just fine. Lots of used stuff out there Ampeg SVT are great sounding amps even if they weigh a ton. Orange AD200B is IMO the best all tube amp on the market (probebly out of your price range as well as mine too LOL). The Traynor YBA 200 is another all tube affair thats very reasonable brand new for under $900.

Anything Orange/Matamp is perfect for doom.

Dont get lightweight cabs...its not doom enough. AHHAHAHA

For doom......all it's gotta be is dirty, loud and thick.

This can be done with nearly any rig......as long as you can blend your dirt pedal with your clean sound. I'm telling ya.....this is magic.

Wow, that even sounds good on youtube... I know speaker size doesn't really mean anything by itself, but if that 1x18+4x10 had a decent crossover then I bet it's a beast.

exactly hahaha. and it's reasonably priced for what it is. If I played doom I'd rock it, the look fits as well IMO.

quick update if anyone here cares - got a 410 custom cab cheep, might replace the speakers in it if its not as good as i hope. Dragging some money together to get a matamp or orange head, decided to go for the best one and keep it for as long as i possibly can (that and i just got some more money i wasnt expecting)

i play in a "doom/stoner" metal kinda band, my set up is a jazz 5 tuned to A standard, drop G at times. my B string is a 150.

i have an ampeg SVT-VR with an ampeg 810E and an ampeg 215E. its br00tal as all hell.

in terms full amps, playing loud stoner stuff its tough not to spend more than a grand, but if you get a bunch of used stuff you can probably do it. ive seen 810 cabs go for 500 used, and you can get a good used head for 600-800 bucks.

I use a passive 4 string, ampeg SVT-AV, 810AV and a 215E. The 215 really added alot more then I would have imagined. Also use a russian big muff

pretty neat meat. i don't prepare meat in the home, yet you do the butchering and cooking, i'll give it a go. flag it for landing. amp sounds f****n' fun.

A Randall or Marshall guitar head would work for what you want, all tube, overdrive channel and sufficient EQ.

The amps you mentioned are actually hybrids, not all-tube amps.

Not the SVT-450H.

Pure solid-state.

If the cab isn't any good then it's not really worth spending money on it's speakers. Speakers can only be as good as the cab they're put in, plus as well as a cab being poorly braced and ported, that bracing and porting is (meant to be at least) very specific for the drivers that are going in it or vice versa.

Basically your better off saving that money for a new cab.

What about gigs with no PA support for backline though?

Aaaah, I read custom as Kustom so I thought you'd just found some battered old 4x10 of theirs for cheap. If you do wanna change the speakers you need to work out what's gonna work with the cab design, otherwise you might end up with some really awful sounding results even if you get some nice drivers for it.
