dorm room setup...

Be advised that your roommate and his/her friends will fondle, play, and possibly damage your bass when you are not around. They won't be able to help themselves - they're too young to have the respect for your property you think it deserves. Probably they won't think messing with it a little won't hurt it, but accidents do happen - especially in a dorm room. A locking hardshell case will be a much better investment than an acoustic bass or a mini-amp.

+1 You might also want to use a bicycle lock to chain the case to the bed or other immobile object. Like it or not, your roommate will have people in and out of your room when you aren't there, and sooner or later, someone will prop the door open while they "just go down the hall for a minute."

My daughter's high school-aged friends who play guitar and bass are allowed to play my instruments when they visit. Even though they are very respectful and careful, things still happen, like cord plugs get stepped on and broken, etc. I don't get upset about it, as I like that they are comfortable coming to our house and making music. It's just a fact of life that with extra bodies in and out and around, stuff will happen.

Minimize the opportunities for damage and loss, at least until you know your roommate well and have established some "house rules." You can always bring more equipment along to college later on.
