Double Bass Double Bass Players Wearing Wedding Band (DB FORUM THREAD)

Married Bassists:

I'm getting married soon and think that wearing a ring on my left hand will be cumbersome for playing and LH technique. Do you agree with this? If so, what solution have you found?

I have decided to wear my wedding band on my right hand to get around this, and possibly switch hands occasionally, though my left ring finger/knuckle is significantly thicker than my right.

Thoughts? Advice?

First off, congratulations!

I've been married just over a year. I have a fairly hefty ring (white gold, 7mm wide) and it's slightly too big so I don't have to get it resized until much, much later.

I play electric bass, so YMMV. I've never felt like I needed to take mine off. I play weekly for church and various gigs, plus rehearsals. You won't even notice it after a few days, anyways.

bassman314 - Thank you! I play upright, and mostly classical, so precise technique is really important to me. I'm not sure what will happen with the particular ring I've bought (it's being cast by the goldsmith now), but from other rings I've worn, I doubt I'll be able to play with it on my LH.

lowfreq33 - Luckily, being the man who proposed, I don't have to worry about wearing a giant diamond (cushion cut refers to the diamond, right?). The ring I've ordered is "comfort fit", so that will take care of some discomfort.

jelly6466 - I'm glad to hear it can be done!

and Finneul - I'm glad to hear I'm not alone!

Before I got married, I was worried about this too. At first, I would switch to another finger when playing. But as I got more and more used to wearing the ring, I started forgetting to. It's been two years and now i don't even think about it.

I've played with mine on since 1979 (Fender Jazz & Benedikt Lang 3/4). It hasn't bothered me a bit. I couldn't take it off, now, if I tried. I wouldn't take it off, if I could. I guess my wife will have to instruct the undertaker to give it to her when I'm gone.

If you're anything like me, you'll forget you even have it on after a few weeks. Soon you will do things you shouldn't, like stacking flagstone in the back yard, without taking it off. This will scratch it and infuriate your wife. She might buy you a new one made of harder metal a few years in, but you'll still wear it when you aren't supposed to and mess it up a little. You'll never notice it when you are playing.

Again, this is all if you're anything like me. ;)

If playing with a wedding band interferes with your playing, there is something wrong with your technique.

It may not physically interfere, in that it is getting in the way.

It might just the addition of a partial ounce of heavy metal on your finger changes the way your hand techniques feels. I can understand that.

I’ve been playing bass and guitar for over 40 years. I’ve been married for 34 of those 40 years (to the same woman) and always take my wedding ring off before I play – whether practising or on a gig.

I’m just uncomfortable playing with it on. ::shrugs::

I got married last year and always take off my ring when I play. It sometimes clinks against the neck and fretboard and annoys me. Our guitarist always wears his and it doesn't bother him.

Judging from the thread, the ring doesn't bother some people but does bother others. If it doesn't bother you, wear it. If it bothers you, don't wear it.
