Double Bass Double bass wattage equivalence

huh? What's watts matter? It's volume, pure and simple. But volume control alone won't cut it, ... check the BG side ... there are many threads on emulating DB with BG. The bottom line is that you may come close, but it can't be done. I play electric bass guitar, have two fine acoustic basses (Tacoma Thunderchief and Guild B-50), use nylon wrapped strings, have adjusted technique over many years ... AND I play the double bass. I get close, but it really isn't the same.

I would only add, that as a point of reference, volume wise, just enough volume to ALMOST drown out an acoustic guitar lead. -not a guy beating rhythm on D-.

I will be jamming with a jazz trio composed of a piano, guitar and drums. The BL preferred an upright but I currently do not own one (plans to get one on the way, though) so I thought about being as accommodating as possible.

I have a 25 W Ampeg combo which I think is overkill. Eventually, if the jam turns into a gig, I would be pricing a 10-15 Watt amp. My goal is to be less intrusive from a stage presence standpoint as a large amp would detract from the acoustic nature of the group.
 
You're not looking for WATTAGE, you're looking for decibel level.

And it doesn't matter, it's NOT going to sound like a double bass. It's not just volume/decibel level, it's string length, the "3 dimensionality" of the sound, and many other factors.
 
If you look through the double bass amp threads, you'll find that that 10-15 or even 25 watt amps are not being used except in a bedroom. All of the highly recommended semi-pro and pro double bass amps rate much higher than this.
I agree, but for the time being, OP is imitating upright on electric, best he can. I find electric watts go much further than amplified acoustic, for bass.
 
Could be, but I used to use a 50 watt Yorkville for trio gigs with both basses and it was just enough to cut it in small rooms. I also blew out two speakers trying to drive it too hard.

I would bet it was the upright that did it, or at least had the larger share.

On electric only gigs, I can get by fine with 375w into a single Baer ML112. (12 + 6)
For upright, or crazy loud gigs with no bass in PA, I need two cabs.
 
Your experience and expertise are much appreciated. Our band's intention is to play in very small venues (20-50 people halls) and perhaps use, when available, house amplification through mains so my amp will be used basically for covering the stage and. Surprisingly, my tiny combo has a line out that may come in handy.

The ultimate goal will be to purchase a used DB to fully blend with the other guys.
 
I would be surprised is anything under 100 watts would cut it. I can's see anything smaller generating a decent bottom end, and not be maxing out all the time. You can always turn it down, but you can't turn it up past 11.

And to think about it another way - if I need to amplify my double bass, then I need at least 100W to make the amplification worthwhile.
 
The main problem here is that the question is ill-posed. As I've been saying here for years, "think SPL, not watts!" A given sound-pressure level can be achieved as a result of an infinite combination of amplifier power and cab sensitivity. The room also matters a great deal. Furthermore, as has been mentioned, given that it's a specific level one is after, there's no such thing as too much power, just adjust to the desired level. Most of the comments above about watts, etc. are just plain misguided and stem from inappropriate generalizations that, admittedly are often useful but can be misleading.

Here's an example. Suppose you take that recommended 100-watt amp and pair it with a cab that achieves 93 dB SPL @ 1-meter with 1 watt (a realistic spec). Now instead, you choose a cab rated at 100 dB SPL @ 1-meter with 1 watt (another realistic spec). All other things being equal between the two cabs (frequency response, directivity, cone excursion, etc.), the SPL achieved with the first cab at 100 watts will be achieved by only 25 watts with the second cab. Every 3 dB increase in sensitivity means a reduction in required power by half. Now, of course, all things are rarely actually equal. There may be reasons why you want that less-sensitive cab. Given many of the cabs out there, the 100-watt recommendation would be a good starting point but it may not work well at all. Not considering what's really behind all of this has led many to waste a great deal of money.

Really though, no offense, but the entire premise is folly. First of all, as has been mentioned, there's more to emulating the sound of a DB than simply achieving a given level. Second, there is no specific level that represents a DB. After all, many of us amplify our DBs as a necessary evil that stems from practicality. Most of us would prefer to go unplugged.

These are you going to keep you or let you go based on how you play, not your amp wattage. Play time, play harmonically relevant. Understand the music via reference recordings and asking them questions about what they are going for and practice producing the sound and music the gig calls for. If you do buy an upright bass, don't expect that to solve anything. You'll have a huge, but temporary if you put your work in, setback in your playing, not an instant boast in credibility.

At any rate, this isn't a challenge that can be overcome with a different amp, especially not a weaker one.

By the way, there's a guy who used to show up at jams locally with a tapewound shod Tacoma Thunderchief and he got VERY close, I thought to a certain type of DB sound and he had a great time feel and I always enjoyed hearing him sit in. I don't think anyone at those sessions cared what he was playing, because he was a good musician and a cool guy and he made it sound good, plugged into whatever amp happened to be on stage that night.

Also, I'm obliged to move this thread to the amps and pickups forum...though I don't think an amp is your solution, it was your question and you posted it in the Basses forum.
 
I don't have a particularly loud bass. Pizzing it produces about 60-70dB about three feet away. (arco is louder)

You need whatever wattage amp is capable of producing enough clean sound to be heard. This mostly depends on how loud the other guys in the band are playing.

A slab is never going to sound like a double bass. Just make your sound as warm as possible, swing, and blend with the rest of the band.
 
I still think it is an interesting trivia question: How much acoustic energy can/does an acoustic bass turn out, and how much is that in watts with a more or less typical bass loudspeaker?
If that were the question asked, then, yes, it would be interesting. The answer is rather simple to determine. Just put a sound-level meter in front of a bass at a specified distance and measure the sound-pressure level. The nature of the room will affect the measurement. That value could be converted to acoustic intensity in terms of watts/cm^2. Those watts would, of course, not correspond at all to the electrical watts required to drive a speaker to produce the same acoustic intensity.
 
Way more complicated than that, though. My first bass was a very "quiet" one, though when my teacher played it suddenly it was 2x+ as loud. What wattage are your hands? Would be an equally valid question.

That said, some great players have a very light touch and have their basses wired hotter. Certainly some basses produce more sound than others with the same person playing them. Setup, strings....There are way too many variables for this to be an objectively answerable question.

And, based on how the OP described his situation, "wattage/volume" is not going to be the issue. Sound and musicality will be.
