Double Sevens

Pretty soon I will be starting a couple new guitars (hopefully this weekend or next).

It seems like everybody I know plays or wants extended range instruments, so I figured I'd make some and see how it goes.

I'm building two with the same shape at the same time to see how much setup time it saves me, rather than building them separately.

I've also bought a few new (small) tools that should help the process a bit as well.




Guitar #1 will have a myrtle top and a ziricote fretboard.

Guitar #2 will have a laminated spalted tamarind and katalox top with a katalox fretboard. I was going to use ebony, but I came across katalox and it seemed like a better choice.

Both guitars will have black limba bodies, wenge and walnut necks, Hipshot bridges, Gotoh tuners, Lace Drop and Gain pickup sets, ebony knobs, and more matching black hardware. They'll both be set neck, string thru, 7 strings, with scarf joints, 25.5" scale, and 12" fretboard radius.

Essentially everything will match except for the woods on the front sides.

I'm planning on an open grained tung oil finish, but I'm also very tempted to do a black fade (dipped look) on the myrtle, so I'll have to figure out how to do that with tung oil.

Wow, super exciting! I'm hoping my second build will be a 7 string guitar for my twin brother - using the leftover cutout from my bass build neck billet to keep the twin theme strong.

Can't wait to see how these pan out.

PS anyone else see a rather womanly figure in the grain of guitar 1's front? ....!

I always seem to pick those ones... I had lmi do the fretboard radiusing, so at least I don't have to do that part.

I like the shape alot.....sorta looks like the Alembic series ll or their "Darling " guitar...(obviously without the heart omega cutout).

I have been considering doing a bass in a similar shape.

I will need luck to get these done before winter, which is my goal. Far before winter would be great, because I'd like to pre-glue the next few bodies too.

To me this is the best thread I've seen since being a member.

I guess different strokes for different folks.

I have a bass shape to match this that I'm going to be using in the future too. I figured I'd start making "models" instead of making a new shape for every single build, like I have been.


Thanks everyone! I have a problem right now where I have a pile of top woods, some body woods, and a gigantic list of ideas for builds and not nearly enough time to make them all. But we'll start with these and go from there when I can.



I think I may have figured out the black dye thing. It sounds like I should be able to get alcohol soluble aniline dye and spray (or rub) alcohol/dye above or below the finish, assuming alcohol doesn't interact badly with Formby's tung oil. I'll do some more research.
