Double wound string for G string

Hi,

I am looking into how the G string sounds different to the rest of the strings and wondering if it is the single wound vs double wound construction of most sets of strings.

Has any one experimented with this? Does the sound of the G string change (to be more like the D string etc) if a double wound G is used? Or is it inherent in the gauge and tuning (and does anyone make a regular G string as a double wound?)? Can a heavier gauge string (E.G. 0.050") help (double wound or not)?

One of the innovative features of the GHS Balanced Nickels is what's called "balanced construction", which means all four have two wraps, including the G. I've tried the 40-101 set and was quite impressed the way the G sounded better-balanced with the rest compared to some of the more "traditional" sets.

I have a set of the Round Core Boomers (40-95) to try later in the summer. They also employ this "balanced construction" concept, so I'm looking forward to finding out how they would compare to the regular Boomers (40-95, traditional construction) I tried only a few months ago.

I have, and yes, it does change the sound/tonality/feel of the G string compared to the set. It's not a 100% total success, but it brings it more inline with sounding like the same instrument across all strings.

I have a set of the Round Core Boomers (40-95) to try later in the summer.

Instead of waiting till the summer, I decided to go ahead and put these puppies on my P two days ago.

So far, I'm quite happy with the way the 40G sounds nicely balanced with the rest.

I have ordered some GHS balanced strings...
