I've been listening to a lot of Supertramp lately, and have a really begun to appreciate Dougie Thomson's playing. Alive in America, released prior to Breakfast in America, but containing the entire performance of Crime of the Century is amazing! Of particular note, outside of Thomson's and the band's playing, are Davies and Hodgson on 'Bloody Well Right'... just killer! Paris is another live recording, which showcases Thonson playing his stingray he used when the band recorded Breakfast in America. Anyway, nothing too flashy, just some great playing that serves the songs being played.
I love Dougie Thomson. He needs to be mentioned more on this site. And Crime Of The Century is fantastic album
Reviving this because "Child of Vision"--I can't get enough of his bass playing on that song. The growl sounds like a Jazz Bass or a Ric to my cloth ears. I saw him playing the Music Man on the 79 tour and don't remember him touching a Fender during the show. But what did he use in the studio on that song?
Supertramp were huge in Canada, which was apparently their most successful market. Crime of the Century and Breakfast in America were both certified Diamond in Canada(10 times Canadian Platinum) for selling over one million copies each. "Dreamer" was a number one hit, and seems to show up in a Canadian TV ad every couple of years or so. "The Logical Song" was also a number one, and Canada was the only market where they had number one singles. And an instrumental segment of "Fool's Overture" was used for more than a decade as the theme to W5, an investigative journalism program on the CTV network.
