DP Custom Basses

I just received my third DP Custom, by far the best one. This is my dream bass. I speced it out completely. Dave was a joy to work with. I started not to post this but Dave has received so much bad mouthing here that I felt the need to set the record straight. Dave's quality has increased 100 fold from 5 years ago. He had a very good product back then. Price to value was excellent then, it is off the charts now. I am not employed or otherwise compensated for these comments and If Dave knew I was posting this I think he would be embarrassed by the attention. Any one in or near Chicago is welcome to come by and see and play this bass. It is short scale because that is what I like. I have played long scale for over 35 years and I don't want to stretch anymore. I want to play comfortable. Just got back from my first rehearsal with this one. It was pure heaven...well it was rehearsal at church!
The quality of workmanship is equal or better than anything at twice the price.I did have him install Alembic pickups and electronics so the sound is freakin phenominal. If you are considering a custom built bass take a look at DP Custom. The price is right and so is the quality.

Good to know. I actually had some discussions with Dave a few years ago, but all the bad buzz about his work here on TalkBass scared me away. If Dave's quality control is much improved since then, I may give his stuff another look.

By the way, your bass even looks like an Alembic - especially with that beautiful cocobolo top and back. Very impressive...

That is a beautiful bass mcrracer, congrats!

Wear it Proud, Play it Loud!

I had some communication with Dave about a build 2 years ago. Unfortunately I was unable to follow through with the project at the time. I think it may be time I got ahold of Dave again.

I had the chance to play this bass yesterday. This was my first time playing one of Dave's bass. I do remember all the the bad press that he was getting.

The quality on this bass is right up there with the more house hold boutique builders out there. The craftsmanship was dead on. Not a bad anything. From the attention to detail, if Dave was any other builder especially a known one, this instrument would easily list for at least some where in the range of 5K. The quality of woods makes this bass a beautiful work of art that was oozing top notch craftsmanship.

The bass sounded( in my hands) awesome. Very growly when I wanted and punchy and articulate if need. The Alembic pickups and Pre seem like they where meant to go in this bass and with a 30"scale,the bass sounded and played extremely well.

Again this was my fist time ever seeing, hearing or playing one of Dave's basses and from a scale of 1-10 I give this bass a perfect 10 especially given all the bad press I read on this builder.

This is a bass that will leave you in awe, you would have to see, hear and play it to get the full picture. I was really impressed and I own my share of high end boutique basses and I can honestly say that DP Customs has arrived in a big way.

If there was any one who would be getting the last laugh, from what I saw and heard yesterday, it would definitely be DP Customs.

Hmmm.

I almost ordered one from him a few months ago but was also scared away by this forum...and I also might have a job change and possible move so it was one more thing I was putting "on hold".

It was also a comparatively new design I was going for and a lot of money for me, so I decided to wait until things settled down a bit.

Congratulations. Seeing your bass and reading Jauqo II-X's review makes me think about trying DP for my next bass (instead of the more expensive yet well respected luthier I have had my mind set on for a while).
How long did it take to build after you finalized your order?

Congrats on a great bass!!
For the price range i'm sure they are great basses. they look very nice to me, never played one.
The thing that made me itchy about dp basses apart from the bad reviews here on talkbass are the poor quality of the pictures in his site. Even the ones you posted are not so good pictures if you don't mind me saying it, i suppose those were taken by dave?
Anyway, it seemed to me that the pictures are not making justice to the bass.

Congrats on the beautiful bass. I really like hearing about folks who take criticism to heart, and eventually get their stuff turned around. It's much more satisfying than the many threads -necessary as they are- that warn about shoddy workmanship and unmet expectations.

I look forward to seeing more reports on work from Mr. Pushic.

As Jauqo said it does balance well sitting even without a strap. I knew that because of the short horns which I wanted the balance may be off and standing it is. I ordered a special "Y" type strap from Planet Waves which should take care of that issue. Dave tried his best to talk me out of this body shape but I have a Epi EBO and I like the Alembic Brown Bass. This was sort of a cross between the two. Dave flat out will not make a copy of another companies' products, which is cool. I respect that. I am going to try to put some better pictures up. Any questions about the bass feel free to ask. You can get the headstock made whatever size YOU want.
Dave and I first started talking about this one May 8th 2007, deposit paid July 2007, continued massaging the specs until Nov or Dec. and received it Apr 22 2008. Not bad at all.

I have owned a DP Custom for 3 years now and I have to say I use this bass for just about everything. The tone, Craftsmanship, and Playability of this bass is outstanding. It is really a shame that some of Dave's early basses had some issues...because of that reason it has kept people away from purchasing what I believe is a really fine handcrafted bass at a incredible price. I also have to say that Dave is also a great guy to do buisness with. Jauqo said any other builder would charge 3-5 thousand for basically the same bass Dave builds for 1-2 thousand.....Dave gives you alot of bass for the money.
