DR black beauties,

hey, i'm relatively new to bass, I'm fifteen and started last summer, i like to think that I'm picking it up pretty easiesly.
any ways, i just bought my self some DR black beauties,
and wanted to know if that was a good choice or not, and i wanted to know your opinion on them too,
my setup right is the Fender Aerodyne Jass Bass, would that make a nice combination?

The tone is nice. A bit on the bright side, but still has a full low end. My two gripes about it is the fact that the paint chips off the strings very easily, so it's not completely black after a while, and the fact that it's way too sensitive to finger noise. If you're great at finger technique and can keep finger noise to a minimum, these strings might really be great for you, but I'm planning on eventually switching them out to get some flatwounds or other, less noisy strings.

They're pretty good, they last longer than regular strings imo, when new they tend to have a "sticky" feel but goes away after some use, you will notice that their black coat starts to chip.

I have a set. For coated I prefer the feel and tone of Elixrs, but my main strings are DR Lo-Riders. As for the black coating coming off I touch up with a black sharpie.

Wait.. Just wanted to correct myself.

Much of the finger squeaking and noise I got that I thought were from the strings actually turned out to be from my compressor. I had the settings too sensitive. The finger noise isn't that big of an issue.

I prefer them for my Peavey J-84. Excellent resonance with a gritty edge

Ed Friedland did a review with his jazz bass on several types of DR strings. When he was finished, the BB's went back on his jazz. Check this link out and listen to some of the samples. Very interesting and informative.

I use these on my mod q5. Amazing sweet crunchy tone that lasts for quite some time. I don't have any issues with the coating chipping off either...but I don't use a pick.

I played a show where another band's bassist had a catastrophic failure (he broke 2 strings...on stage, amazing right?) so I lent him my bass. He played with a pick (hard metal stuff) for an hour set and there was no wear on the coating. I was looking for it because Elixirs always wore off almost immediately when I'd mess around with a pick.

Oh, and these strings look awesome, at least on a dark red / black modulus

p.s. Welcome to the grand world of bass! I put down my guitars 10 years ago and life has been good ever since. A few words of advice: I would try a few different makes and models of strings, find what works best for you and your instruments - it will vary. Practice with a metronome. When in doubt follow the kick drum

I like the Black Beauties both from a feel and tone perspective. The one thing to watch for with coated strings is that you can't ground the bass by touching the strings. This might be an issue on some basses, especially if they aren't shielded and/or have single coil pickups.
