DR Black B's breaking

I just bought 2 sets of these. First the d string wouldn't tune up(unwinding at the post). Then two g strings did the same thing. I have never had this happen in 25 years.. so frustrating, and I have an out of town show tonight. I'm going to worry about the all night.. any input?

Round core DRs require special handling. Did you stretch them? Did you crimp before cutting? Do you twist them on installation?

You might have cut them too short. The coating is slippery, so you may need more wraps than usual to make them stick. If you are unsure they will hold, I'd definitely put your old set back on to get through the gig without drama.

I cut them before bending them..operator error. Dr is sending me a new set anyway! Great customer service! !

The sharp edge of the slot in the tuning post cut through the windings on the only set of coloured DR's I used. We're not the only ones to have this happen either, I believe. Other manufactures cover the windings with silk, or spread the windings further apart at the headstock end to prevent this.

Bad design IMO.

Yes..on your tuners. The better tuners have any sharp edges ground down so they are not sharp or have burrs which can cut through strings.

Maybe it's the type of string/string composition/structure.

Some strings you can't cut until after they're installed....

I don't know about DR's but, for example, On Pyramid's site they say never to cut their strings before putting them on.

There's actually zero chance that this happened unless your strings are made of pasta. Breaking the core wire from too sharp of a bend I could believe. But there's no way the tuner cut the cover wire.

I'm sorry, but it really is impossible. The steel the strings are made of is much tougher than the aluminum tuning peg. I've used DR's for decades on Hipshot tuners, as have many more of us, without issues. It may have LOOKED like it cut through, but really, something else happened.
